Title: auto to standard

I have a 79 auto 4x4 3/4 ton I would like to make a standard so I can put a wrecker on the back. I am new to 4x4's. I have another 1/2 ton 2wd that is a standard to donate parts. Can I do this or am I going to run into problems. will the transmission bolt to the transfer case? Or is it possible to run a pto from an automatic somehow?
Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated.

I have a 83 chevy 4x4 with a 700r4 tranny and 208 t-case I would like to put in a four speed with a 205 t-case. exactly how hard is it to do the conversion? how long would it take aprox.? i do not have a donor vehicle. thanks

Why not run the PTO off the tranfer case? I have had more chevt trucks than I can count. Most of the older ones had pto plates ont the tranfer case.

You would need a 205 t-case.It seems like the 203 has a pto opening also, but i'm not sure.You need the proper pto to fit the t-case.If I remember correctly, you need the t-case in neutral,the tranny in drive or 3rd(manual tranny) to operate the pto.

What type of winch/wrecker body do you have?Is it pto or hydraulic?I've been in the wrecker business for about 10 years & have built 2 trucks myself.I may be able to help you with a little more info.Also the 2wd 4spd would need the output shaft replaced plus the adapter and your t-case would need the input shaft replaced.I recently traded a rebuilt turbo350 with a shift kit & a rebuilt 205 case for a used 4spd & a 205 even swap.You might look in a local junkyard for a 4spd/205 & swap them your auto.Even if you have to give them a little boot,the 4spd would be better.By the way, I hate autos.You can keep the auto if you put your pto on the t-case, or you can go elec. like some said earlier.

hey i have a 1985 4x4 3\4 ton truck and i have the special chevy towing transmisson and i need more speed on the open road. i am thinking about a bolt on overdrive or a 4 speed manuel.
i need help with this

I'm not sure, but I assume you have a turbo 400 tranny.If so a 4 speed manual will not help you with your top speed. You could swap in a 700r4 overdrive in, but you will probably have to change driveshafts. Also there is a lt. duty 4 speed overdrive manual tranny, but they are rare. I've been in the towing biz for 10 years and I've only seen one, its in a 82 k-10 diesel p/u I have for parts.You might be better off with the bolt on overdrive.
