hello everyone, i have a 1985 gmc 3/4 ton 4x4 with a sm465 4speed and a 208 transfer case that i just put a 14bolt ff and a dana 60 in and the stock front driveshaft is a little too long to fit the 60. i wanted to ask if the stock shaft can be modified to fit or will i have to have a new one made up? i`m selling the truck and i told the guy that wants to buy it that i would get a shaft in there before he buys it. i just dont want to put much money into a truck i`m selling thanks for any help with this.

You should be able to take it to a machine shop and have it shortened. Not sure on prices could probably be done under 100 bucks.
-
i had to have some driveshaft work done and i just carried it to a local welding shop. cut the yoke off at the factory weld, shorten and reweld the yoke back on. balance is perfect on mine!

I shorten my own front shafts. Balance is not a big deal as you are not traveling at speed in 4x4. I scribe three long lines on the shaft two closer together. I cut out the needed length with a large tubing cutter, clamp the shaft to a peice of C channel with the lines lined up tack weld three spots, flip it over tack weld three more spots, turn it and weld short beads on oposite side till its done.

Just add another couple inches of lift. That'll take up the extra length on that shaft, lift it, fat chicks can't jump!

Thanks for the help. the guy that wanted to buy it backed out so i`ve decided to keep it. i would love to lift it more but unfortunately it would no longer fit in my garage if i did.

I have a "frankenstien" truck its an 82 silverado c-10 6.2L cab & bed mounted on an 86 K-20 custom deluxe under carridge I installed an SM 465 tranny & NP 205 case, hooked to a built 427 bigblock, the frame allready had a Dana 60 up front & a semi floater 14" out back which I replaced with a full floater 14" I need to replace the front springs and lift the truck at least 4", I will probably just use a flip kit for the rear. so does any one know where I can get some springs? also some bigblock headers that will clear the Dana 60? every one tells me I have a 1 ton because of the front and rear axels, but I swear the donor truck was a 3/4 ton thanx, Doug
sorry I posted this as a reply, I meant for it to be a new topic! First time poster on this forum, maybe the moderator can move this?
