Title: 4WD conversion ? Will a Dana 44 work?
Post by: truck1974 on April 15, 2005, 11:33:00 pm
I was considering converting my 76 dually to  4WD.  Do I have to use a Dana 60 front axle or would a 3/4 Dana 44 work.  I would like to use a Dana 60 like everyone else but they cost so dang much.  Someone told me I could only use a Dana 60 with a dually because of the type of front rims dually's have.  Anyone know?  Thanks.

This is a little cryptic reading.  What exactly do you have that you are converting?  4x2 to 4x4 or just swapping axles?

I don't have any axle for the front at the moment.  It is a 2wd currently.  I was just wondering if a Dana 44 would work instead of the pricey Dana 60.  I was thinking of converting to 4WD.

You need to be a little more patient waiting on answers...
You can use any axle you chose to.  You just have to get rims to fit the truck.  D44's came on Duallys also, but were 3/4T or 1ton.  D60's came on 1 tons.

Are all the mounting holes already in the frame.  I don't think they made a dually 4x4 in 76?

If you are converting a 2WD to a 4x4, no the holes are not in the frame.  Duallys were availibe in '76.

I also feel it is simpler cheaper to buy a 4x4 than to convert a 4x2 to 4x4 due to all the specific 4x4 pieces you will need.  it will end up being basically everything but the framerails almost.
