Title: Lifting my 83 4x4
Post by: biscuithead on January 04, 2007, 06:31:00 pm
I have a 1983 3/4 ton 4wd Chevy Silverado, it has the 6.2 liter diesel motor.  I am wanting to install a lift kit.  I am not sure what I am looking for as far as a body lift and or a suspension lift.  This truck is just a weekender and I don't plan on putting it in the mud (or at least not very much).  Any ideas on brands and costs?  I have an above average level of mechanical aptitude and own three welders (and know how to use everyone of them).  I have always been a parts changer, never really built or rebuilt anything, as far as vehichles go.  Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

My personal recommendation is Tuff Country's EZride suspension lift.

I would go with a suspension lift over a body lift. More money but you get what you pay for.

Definitely go with a suspension lift. Pretty much every brand out there is offering the same quality stuff. A 4" - 6" suspension lift looks nice and still rides pretty decent. Stay away from body lifts.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have looked at numerous kits.  Not all kits allow for the weight of the diesel motor.  The ones that do, only lift 4 inches.  Some of the kits come with blocks for the rear, some with springs, some with a new steering arm extension, some without.  I saw where some of the kits state that the use of a body lift with this lift kit will void the warranty.  What's the big deal with a body lift?

???

Most body lifts are ugly. They reveal too much space between the body and frame, bumpers need to be raised look ridiculous if they are not, linkages, steering column, etc need to be increased while at the same time the driveline sits lower in the body, your cooling fan and radiator no longer line up etc etc. I had a 6" suspension lift on my 77 K10 shortbed with a 454 and had no problems so I don't see why a diesel would be any different.

You might get some input to lifting your diesel from a spring shop,They should be able to steer you in the right direction. And answer any questions you have.
