Title: serious wiring problem
Post by: 78chev2bnice on April 14, 2006, 10:32:00 pm
First of all you have to realize that the wiring in this truck is shady(not from Me I dont wire stuff) .  So at the end of last fall when I parked the truck it kept blowing the radio/idle stop fuse when the gas pedal was pushed in all the way and therefor the cd player would turn off.  So today I figured it was either the shady wiring or maybe something else.  So I pulled the subs and amp out from behind the seat, pulled the seat out so I had some room to work, pulled the one heater vent line the runs under the dash.  I put a new fuse in the radio spot and pushed the gas pedal and the radio went out when I released the gas pedal the CD player was back but the memory was reset.  Sometime between all the action and wire moving something was jarred or blew because now the truck wont start.  I turn the key on and sometimes the battery gauge works and sometimes it doesn't.  it wont even start the starter motor it just clicks and the gauge goes back to nothing.  the truck started before all this happened earlier today.  its like it has a bad connection at the battery but the terminals are all clean and tight.

Try honking the horn and check if the headlights are dim.Maybe the battery's just dead and needs a boost.

also, check to see if the stereo is connected to switch operated by the gas pedal.(orange wire) That controls the kickdown for the tranny.( if your truck has this)

This happened to me last year when i changed the starter.  When I took it in the shop fixed it and this is the work order that I got for it.
1)check vehicle for no start
2)check wires going to starter
3)reroute wires so they wont touch the header
4)Replace fusible link
5)clean battery cables and terminals.

Im trying to figure out what the fusible link was.  I've checked everything else that I can think of.

You gotta go under the truck at the pass. side.Find the wires going to the starter motor. There's a white plastic thing on one of the wires. This is a fusible link. There may also be one on a wire coming from the power block on the firewall. It may be wrapped in cable cover ,so you may have to pull some of it back to find it.If you jump a wire around (bypass)this plastic thing(fusible link) and it starts, you can be pretty sure that its toast.
