My truck sits too low to take to an alignment shop, nobody will do an alignment. I roughed my alignment (no funny tire wear yet) and I need to center my steering wheel, because its driving me nuts! Anybody know how to do this? I already made an attempt trying to do it by adjusting the rag-joint. It didnt work because the splines are referenced to go on only one way. Help???

You have to put the steering wheel where you want it to be first and then align the frontend.

Lock the steering wheel straight ahead and measure the distance at the leading edge of the front tires and then the trailing edge of the front tires directly at the centerline. Adjust the tie rod linkages to be equal and you will have zero toe. Alternative: If your truck is too low find an alignment shop that has a pit.

Found this old thread regarding centering the steering wheel. The GM shop manual says that the steering box (in my case, a 1980 power steering unit) must be centered or high centered (I don't remember the exact terminology used) prior to adjusting the tie rod ends to center the steering wheel. The manual doesn't go into detail about how to do this. Anyone know?

Turn the wheel where it is straight , lock it in place (most use some form of a tension tool) and then adjust the tierods accordingly.
