Title: Seat mounting nuts
Post by: SUX2BU99 on August 18, 2006, 10:02:00 pm: I just put a pair of leather power buckets from a late 90s S-blazer in my 85 Chevy to replace the velour bench. I drilled new holes but used the rear outer factory holes as my locating points, thus having to drill 3 new holes per bucket seat. I used a grade 8 3/8" bolt with grade 8 nuts and grade 5 washers and lock washers to secure the bolts but I would like factory style mounting nut/block. The factory uses a steel cube with a tapped hole in it to accept and hold the seat bolt, and it's welded to the floor pan. I would like something similar. Anybody know where to get these? The other way I was thinking was to get double up on fender washers and weld those to the floor pan, and then weld a nut to the fender washers. Crawling under the truck everytime to take the seats out really sucks. That and the outside front bolt on the passenger side is right above the pass. side gas tank (I don't have a drivers side tank), and for now, there is no bolt in there.

If anybody is interested, I'll post the series of pics I took while doing the installation of the drivers side.

I figured out what to do about the bolt on top of the pass side saddle tank. I made a steel strap that goes from the bench seat bolt hole over to where the bucket seat bolt hole is and both are bolted. Not perfect but whattya do eh?

What I'd like to see is the underside of a Jimmy floor pan or a truck that had bucket seats to see how and where they put the bolt holes. I'm still searching for those seat bolt mounts that weld to the floor pan. Haven't found anybody selling them yet.

Plug weld a square of sheet metal the same or a bit thicker gauge than the floor tin where your nut needs to be, drill a 1/2" to 3/4" hole. Weld the correct size nut to a fender washer and then weld the fender washer over the hole with the nut down throught the hole, and you could weld the nut from the bottom side too.

As for the mounting nut, my original plan was to have a couple of #5 fender washers welded to the floor pan, then a #8 nut welded to the washers. I'd like a more factory appearance though and the factory mounting nuts are nice for this.

This is the underside of my truck right now. Here you can see the factory mount. It's a solid steel square with a hole tapped in the center. That's what I'd like. I could go to a metal mart and have it all done, for a lot more than buying them already done I'm sure. Next to it is my new #8 bolt and nut with #5 washer and lock washer. Nothing is welded and it's a pain to try and get really tight since the washer and nut will start to slip once you really start to torque on it.
