Title: License Plate Lights?
Post by: 197 on October 28, 2006, 09:46:00 pm
Did a 73 c-20 have them? My father said that I have a different bumper then the stock one? Do I need them, cause if they didn't come with them from the factory I shouldn't be required to have them Correct?

I am pretty sure that these trucks did not even come with rear bumpers from the factory. But license plates lights are mandatory here in IL at least.

yes not for sure but I remember my grandfather telling me that back in the 60's and 70's he bought trucks new and they did not come with rear bumpers. You had to go buy one.

I remember rear bumpers being "sold seperately" in the 80's(not sure about 70's). They were required by law, but for some reason were dubbed a dealer-installed option.

Your 92 chevy did not come with one what? A bumper?

Where is the factory license plate mount then?

Sorry, yes a bumper. I think  the license plate was just on a cheap plastic frame? I don't remember, I had a bumper on it in two days.

I think you got ripped off too. I worked at a Chevrolet Dealership from 92 - 96 and never once saw even a total strip model come through without bumpers. They probably took it off your truck and put it on another one and ripped you off.

None of the trucks sold here (Alabama) came with factory bumpers.  They were dealer items and the trucks were ordered without them.  The dealer typically installed "step" bumpers on the trucks, instead of the now popular smooth bumper.

My grandfathers '73 still has the step bumper on it that the dealer installed, as did my fathers '75, my old '78, my brothers '76, my old '81.....  3 of these were bought brand new.  I understand from the local Dealers that they stopped ordering the factory bumper because a lot of the owners didn't like them and they ended up with a ton of them.

used to see lots of steel box bumpers with the dealers name stamped into it. Doubt that those were factory. I think that they were more common in the 70's and on work trucks, where the owner would need something heavier than the cheap ones they came with. Certainly, not all of the trucks at the dealership did not have them in 92, it was a $200 option. But you could buy a new bumper for $110. Thats what a lot of people did then.

I don't think in this state you can sell a vehicle without bumpers if you are a licensed dealer but then again maybe that's just my state.... Who knew:eek

dealers could order the trucks without bumpers early on. the one I worked for installed cheap bumpers so they could make more money. the bumper was also a factory installed option. well equipped trucks were ordered with the better looking bumpers and other accessories.

I remeber as a kid my parents bought a Datsun pickup new and it didn't come with a rear bumper, and my sister and brother in law bought a new 76 Chevy C 10 it didn't have one either. I had a 64 and a 76 Chevy truck both had steel bumpers with the dealers name stamped into it. The 64 said A.J. Foyt Chevrolet, Dallas Texas. It was mangled beyond recognition though.
