I have my truck up for sale here and a couple other places. One of my biggest gripes has been the amount of space in the cab of my truck. I might just keep it and continue restoring/modifying if I could improve a couple of things. The biggest thing for me is the steering wheel position. The steering column is a non-telescoping, non-tilt version and it feels like it is way too close for my driving comfort. Is there a way to push the whole column into the dash or shorten it? Are different year columns any shorter?
The other thing is something I wonder about, but may not be practical. Does anyone know the difference (or dimension) of the cab front to rear distance on a 73-87 (Mine is a 1975 C10) vs. say a 98-02 Chevy truck? I think the newer cabs are bigger front to rear, but I can't confirm.

Unless you custom built a column it will be about the same length. I don't know what the length is compared to say a Vega though.
As far as the cab size being larger, that is a correct statement, but I don't know how much.
You can always swap in a tilt if that would help. Chris Lucas

You can buy a universal column that will be closer to the dash. They have the standard break away capsule collapsable GM design. Typically a tilt column with a smaller wheel makes them much more tolerable without a huge price tage. I believe Summit sells them in chrome and aluminum at a better price then .

Vile, Are you talking about the Ididit Columns?
We have aftermarket Ididit tilts if that is what he is interested in... I figured he was looking at something under $100 though. Chris Lucas

Simple and cheap would be best, of course, but I'm just looking for a way to move that steering wheel closer to arm's length rather than a foot away from my chest.

I'm not sure about what brands and such but I did stumble across this company that can get you a column by your dimensions....

I put smaller wheels on my trucks, Van wheels work well and don't look out of place. I don't mind the wheel being close but like the extra room fro entering & exiting with the smaller wheel.
