Title: Next Project
Post by: VileZambonie on February 12, 2007, 08:44:00 pm
A friend of mine picked up an 86 K10 and I built him a pretty slick engine...here's a few pix of it going in. I'll take more pix and post them as I progress...

looks awesome, the only thing is watch that fan i have one on my 350 in my 86 k10 and if i am sitting in traffic it will start to overheat so i had to put an electric fan up front.

I have a shroud going in so I'm not worried about it. Hopefully by the weekend I'll have this sucker running. Tommorrow we're supposed to get a huge snow storm (if you believe weathermen) so that will set me back a day with all the plowing, shoveling, snow blowing :(

Good looking engine, but those flex fans are pure garbage!!  I had one years ago on my small block, never kept my engine cool.  Put on a stock clutch fan setup...never had a problem since then.  I had a fan shroud too.  If you insist on running that fan, be sure to center it in the fan shroud...half in, half out.

As nice as the engine looks make sure the power steering pump gets painted. Just looks out of place. Good looking engine. I also would get rid of that fan. I too had one and went back to OE.

The fan pulls more CFM's than the OE fan and fits just right in the shroud, so it stays. That heavy 3 blade clunker is goin right in the garbage can. I fired it off today and broke it in, set the timing and took it for a rip after changing the oil. He's not gonna want to stop once he picks this thing up tonight. This thing has some serious nut and it sounds MEAN :evil  I took more pix and will add them later. As far as painting everything else that's on him at this point since it's not my truck. I just built the engine and put another one of these trucks into action and thought I'd share

What headers did you use? Is that a 4x4 or 4x2?  I'm looking for some shortys for my blazer.

They are shorty headers for 88 up models and I had them coated.

The truck is a K10 4X4

The engine.... It is blue printed and balanced for real. Most people who say that don't even know what it means :lol

So it was decked to a zero deck height and blue printed from there. Steel crank and heavy duty rods. Forged TRW domed pistons .030" over. The cam is degreed in at .491" intake and .510" exhaust valve lift. The heads are tuned and ported with 70cc combustion chambers 2.02 int 1.60 ex valves. Rotators elimintated and Crane valve springs. Screw in studs and guideplates with hardened pushrods. A dual plane high rise aluminum intake. Used a GM HEI but I tweaked it and topped it with a clear cap and rotor with MSD wires. It will run on 89 octane and tears @#%$. It's a nice engine and I'll take some more pix when I finish tweaking it after he breaks it in.

What kind of budget??? Sounds like something I could enjoy as long as its in the price range..:D

The machine shop work cost the most. Decking the block, boring, etc adds up quick but Top to bottom I had about $1500 into this one.

If you want a budget engine you can do a decent rebuild and keep the price around $600 bucks

a 383 is the way to go to get the torque and hp out of a small block.

I believe they have the same ones in Summit.... A whole engine kit in the same paint scheme and everything for like $160 or something...

They're easy enough to build. I am building one right now as my next chevy small block project. I scored a set of Vortech heads from a 98 tahoe that needed a new engine and the guy bought a crate engine. I plopped a set of crappy 1.72"s I had on the core engine and kept the vortech heads so that was a nice free score. You can buy an engine kit from summit, jegs and a zillion other companies out there.
