hey folks, I just bought a '77 chevy 4x4 pickup from a friend of mine down in South GA, it's a great truck! but after some investigating found out the VIN and the truck as it is now don't match! Here's how the truck as it is now:
1977 Chevy 4x4 pickup
LWB
stock SB 350 engine w/4 bbl quadrabog
stock exhaust man.
TH350 tranny
ain't washed the grease off the xfer case to get any #'s on it.
locking hubs
3" suspension lift (cheap block setup for now)
3" body lift (looks a lot better than I thought it would)
Anyways here is my breakdown of the VIN:
C=Cheverolet
C=conventional cab (?? what? K= 4 wheel drive and it's a 4 wheel drive!)
S= 454-4 (?? what!? truck has a 350 in it! L=350-4)
4= heavy half (whatever that implies)
4=pickup
7=1977
A=Lakewood Assembly plant
155,844=build sequence (truck was the 55,844th unit produced)
I took some pics of a sticker on the inside of the lid to the glovebox, here they are:

Can anybody tell me how this C10 morphed into a K10? Sorry if I'm not clear on all this. I'm just curious how my truck went from the truck described by the VIN to the one it is now. Funny, I was thinking about dropping a 454 in it before I researched the VIN. Tell me what ye think!
thanks!

Good question! Someone must have converted it or replaced the cab with a 2wd unit? Some strange things have happened with engine codes i think. My 1980 3/4 ton has an engine code of 'x', some decodes show it as a 400 while others don't show it at all. The motor is a 350.

Are you getting the VIN from the glovebox or the dash? The glovebox can easily be swapped out?
If they in fact don't match, the cab probably was swapped out. Chris Lucas
