i have a 77 c10 custom deluxe that has no cruise or anything on it. i want to know how to get the ignition switch out of it i tried the haynes manual and it didnt really help that much. i already have the steering wheel and all that out.

unless you are down past the turn switch, you aren't far enough in to remove the switch.

i am past the turn signal switch i have all of that stuff out. and it is not a tilt column, all the column has is a turn signal switch and a gear shifter. according to the haynes manual i have to push a flat piece of metal through a slot on the side. but i couldnt get this to work. so i was wondering if there was another way or if someone can give me a little better directions on how to do it.

The lock cylinder can only be removed in the RUN position(keys in it)
Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the slot closes to the cylinder above the screw(on the right),break the casting flash loose and at the same time depress the spring latch at the lower end of the lock cylinder. With the latch depressed, the lock cylinder can be removed from the housing.

well i was going to replace the whole switch but after messing with it for two days now i have decided i am just going to swap in a tilt column. so now i would like to know what years i could rob a column out of.

You still haven't really explained what you are trying to accomplish. Why were you trying to replace the __________(switch or lock cylinder)? What's the problem? Maybe we can help you find an easier better solution.
As far as column compatibility, anyone can be retrofitted in from these trucks but the turn signal switches are different and cruise/headlight dimmer.

From what I gathered he wanted to replaced the lock cylinder because he had the top of the column torn down.The switch is down on near the floor on the column, afew screws and its off.

the switch is worn out and wont turn, the lock is busted off, and my turn signal switch and all that has been broken for about 2 years now. so thats why i decided to just replace the column and i have a tilt column out of an 83 but i wasnt sure if it would fit.

The ignition switch is located on the top of the column and is actuated byt the ignition key and lock cylinder. If it's the lock cylinder and key and ignition switch it's really pretty easy to change.
Unplug the turn signal switch and wrap some mechanics wire around the pigtail. snake it out and then tape & wrap the new switch to snake it back down the column. If your turn signal switch springs are broken you can get the replacement springs for like $2 bucks if that's all that's wrong.
Changing the lock cylinder is easy too. Once you have the lock plate removed and the signal switch out of the way, remove the pin bolt that retains the lock cylinder, turn it to the run position and pull it out. If you have a chime module you'll have to pull out the plastic insert that slightly covers the bolt.
Swapping columns is easy too but if your wiper controls, cruise, Headlight dimmer are different then the pigtails will plug in but your wipers will only work one speed on or off.

well the truck doesnt have cruise, intermittent wipers or anything like that. all that it has n the column is a turn signal switch.

the switch is the eletrical piece on the top side of the column tube down by the pedals
the ignition lock is in the column for the key to go into
terminology problems here
the ignition lock will come out in any position and without a key
it is either retained by a lock screw pin or by a clip
one or the other
83 was the last year before wipers and such on the column
73-83 all will work
84-87(91) wont
