Title: won't start
Post by: 74BBC on April 08, 2007, 09:36:00 am
Hey, I'm new to this site. My truck just clicks, I've replaced the starter, checked the ground wires, and checked the battery and starter and altenater with a voltmeter. The ignition switch is good also. Any help. Thanks

How did you check the battery? Just because it has 12 volts doesn't mean it can provide 250 Amps of current to crank your engine. Try to jump start it with another vehicle. It's probably the battery but if you are positive the battery is good and had it load tested then try to rotate the crankshaft and make sure the engine turns.

tried to jump, still just clicks. I also tried to jump the starter, the engine turns a few times, could it be I need a high torque starter? It is doing this since I put in a new tranny 454/th400. Thanks

If you don't have a really nice set of jumper cables, it will do what you are saying.  I use really heavy duty thick jumper cables.

Do you have a battery charger?  You say you jumped it on your starter....wasa it directly on the positive bolt on solenoid?  Still, if you have a so-so set of jumpers, aint gonna do well.

You say it will turn over slowly....well, that is a start...it aint the tranny pump or it will just go clunk one time and freeze up.

Do what vile said....get a socket set and turn the crank over with the 5/8" socket manually a few times to see of free it is.

You should not need a high torque starter just because you changed transmissions.

I believe it is still your battery.

I'd do one at a time....like start w/ the battery.

If you are using a sb starter it surely will not work on your bb. Make sure you are using the correct starter for the 454.
