Title: just cant figure it out?????
Post by: junktruck on April 22, 2007, 08:14:00 pm
I changed my valve cover gaskets today and cleaned and painted my valve covers.I had to take off my egr valve and i put it back on when finished,i had to remove four spark plug wires which i tagged so as to put them back in the right location and i disconnected the alternator wires which i replaced when i was finished.Thats all that i did but the problem i am having is that when i went to start my truck afterwards it will not idle and will only stay running if i keep feathering the gas petal and its choppy at that, but as soon as i let off the gas it immediately dies.It was running fine before i changed the cover gaskets and i was careful not to knock anything loose while working.Anyone with any idaels of what i can check i would greatly appreciate it.BTW my truck is an 1981 k10 with a 305 4bbl  thx.

Is your egr valve open? make sure there is no vacuum to the egr valve at idle. Check that then recheck your firing order.

EGR valve is there just to cover the hole in the manifold, it hasnt had a vacuum line connected to it since ive had the truck about three years.I rechecked the plug wires and they are in the original posistion.

You may have a vacuum line loose--or a vacuum leak due to bad gasket.  Ensure your PCV valve works.  Are you absolutely positive the plug wires are correct?  1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2, is the fireing order. Your driver side has cylinder 1,3,5,7,passenger side is 2,4,6,8.  See where the number one cylinder wire goes to on your distributor and follow distr cap wires around--each wire, following the firing order.

Either uyou switched 2 wires or the EGR valve is hanging open for some reason. Pull up on the diaphragm and see if it's moving at all.

Thanks for the help guys, it ended up being a small piece of dirt between the egr valve gasket and the manifold aloowing it to suck air.I cleaned the gasket and siliconed it and it runs as good as ever.
