I'm looking at buying one of these trucks but I remember in that era they were putting olds diesel motors that were junk in them. How do I know which motor this truck has? Thanks.

Is it the original engine? If so just look at the VECI label under the hood.

If it is anything from 82-95, it isnt the Olds converted diesel its either a 6.2 or 6.5L Detroit . There are several people running them and a whole website devoted to them... http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ (http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/)

Ok I'll check it out. I have never had any personal experience with this motor just heard all the rumors.

The rumors you've heard about the converted 5.7 litre gas engine to diesel are true. But don't let that confuse you with the 6.2 litre diesel engine. it was designed specifically for the GM light truck market starting in 1982 and is completely different from the 5.7 conversion.
The 6.2 diesel is a naturally aspirated engine- meaning it was not designed for a turbo charger, or ram air intake. So it doesn't develope the power that today's diesels do. But if it was taken care of, it's a good engine, and you shouldn't discount it's reliability. I think they (Detroit Diesel) manufactured the 6.2 through 1993 when the 6.5 took it's place. The 6.5 was made to accept a turbo and got more computer friendly (ECM), so it was a well accepted improvement for GM diesels.

Banks make their sidewinder turbo for the 6.2, in fact when the 6.5 got a turbo it was their design that was used. Here's a link to where Diesel World added a turbo to the 6.2 and their results:

There is one on the K5 I expect delivered tomorrow, I can't wait to see how it runs.

350 olds diesel was not a converted gas to diesel, it was just a crappy diesel. Blocks are good for making high HP 350 olds gas engines out of, they can handle 600hp +
