i totaled my 2000 suburban the other day. as i was at the scene of the crash i got to thinking...i could buy it back from the insurance company and put the motor and tranny out of the 'burb in my '80 model. it is the 5.3l and possibly the 4l60e i'm not real sure on the tranny. is this motor a direct drop in or is there motor mount issues? i found a place that can do the wiring harness and possibly work the ecm to get rid of the uneeded extras. has anyone here done anything like this yet?

just re-read chris' 6.0l swap. this sounds like the stuff i would have to go thru to do the 5.3l swap. i just put tuned port injection on the motor i have and i'm not sure i want to go thru this again. but it sure would be cool.

1) Could you tell us more, in detail, about the process of "buying back" a car from the insurance company? How does this work?
2) If i was going to do a swap like this, i would transfer the whole deal to the other vehicle----the complete wiring and ecm(and, if possible, the gauges!). You would have to find new places to mount stuff like the ecm box and wiring, but to me, this would be easier intead of trying to make up my own wiring and then trying to re-program stuff. I mean, you are going to part out the wrecked truck anyways?
So, with this approach, in essence, the 80' will run and drive exactly like the suburban---except it's just in this "new" chassis. And to me, this approach is easier because i consider wiring and re-programing and all that electric stuff to be quite complicated and frustrating. Whereas making up mounts is rather straightfoward. I've done it before; I drew up pictures of what i wanted and brought them to a welder. 45 mins later, i had my mounts which worked great. Simple.
a) I am guessing that you would need new mounts; This should not be a problem if you can weld. Even if you can't, you can always draw up some diagrams and bring it to a local welder. They enjoy building stuff.

If you have the complete vehicle and the whole harness it isn't that big of an issue. My biggest problem was that fact that I was missing the whole harness from the firewall back.
If you get the mounts, fuel supply/return lines and engine/trans/wiring and all associated parts, it wouldn't be that bad.

Glad to hear you're ok, Mike. It takes a big crash to total out a Burb doesn't it? The 5.3 swap is a great idea!
