im thinking of building a 383 stroker ;D i want something that will really move. im gonna get a 350 block out of my dads 95 chevy van. i was wondering who makes a really good 383 kit-combo for the bottom end and another one that would work good for the top end. i saw some in summit from egale awhile back i think and was lookin at top end packages from edelbrock that have heads, cam and intake. the bottom end ones from egale said about 400 ponies i think but if i could find a good 500+ :o combo and not brake the bank i would love it
im open to input on this idea
edit* it will hopefuly end up in a 72 gmc Sierra Grande 1/2 ton just like the one below - which is wut i wanna buy next ;D ;D

One thing to keep in mind is if you're going to build a 500hp motor, you need to consider is will the current transmission and rear end take the abuse. When I built my 383 for my truck, it has a TH350 tranny and a 10 bolt rear. At the time, I didn't have the $$ to upgrade to a TH400 and a beefier 12 bolt rear for a high end build. So, I just went moderate and spec'd it to 350hp according to several popular 383 builds. 9.5:1 compression, fairly stout cam (about .470-480 lift IIRC) 2.02 fuelie heads. As is, it makes great power, puts a smile on your face, and will run ok on pump gas and get semi-decent mileage. Just something to think about...

I would use summit as they are very reputable. There are a lot of other companies but try getting one of these companies to back their purchases. Your best bet is to get a balanced rotating and reciprocating assembly. Have a GOOD machine shop bore and finish hone your block once you have the pistons. As far as the top end goes think about what you want it to do, you aren't going to get 500HP without a pretty radical cam and high compression ratio and aftermarket ignition system. Edelbrock sells a nice set of aluminum heads- don't overlook all of the basics too- use a standard volume oil pump unless you are going with a high capacity pan. Oil pump drive shaft with a steel sleeve, Double roller timing set and you get the idea...You want 500HP open your wallet! ;D

.......... a beefier 12 bolt rear for a high end build.....
As far as strength is concerned the 10bolt is fairly equal in strength to a 12bolt. The 10 bolt pinion size is only 3/8" smaller, BUT the pinion is larger.

vile- i plan on opening up the wallet quit a bit on this one- its not just gonna happen reall quick but im just now starting to roll the idea around and get the ball moving if i know what i mean :)

i am not really worried about mileage because its just gonna be a weekender if that-- and i figure on running high octane gas in it

one question i have is since the block is a 95 do i have to get a crank made for a one piece or if a get a 2 piece real main seal crank will it work??
heres the top end i was thinking about
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D2096&autoview=sku (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D2096&autoview=sku)
anybody have ideas if they would work good together ?? or is there something else someone thinks i should get???

Well If you got a bunch cash burning a hole in your pocket, Get a crate engine with a warrenty, something like this from sdparts.com 502/502 or look into something from your local machine shop that you can see run and that comes with a dyno sheet.

hahaah- ive never had that problem.
i want to build hte engine myslef instead of just buying a crate engine if you know what i mean

You need a kit made for 1 piece rear main seal.
-
Yeah the one piece rear main crank is externally balanced. The 2 piece is internally balanced as you can tell when you look at the back of the crankshaft it has a counter balanced flange.
Definitely build your own engine, it's fun and rewarding and it's all you. the $ you sink into a crate engine you could pump into lots of extra goodies ,,,

I used this Trick Flow kit from Summit http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=TFS%2DK314%2D500%2D450&autoview=sku. They advertise 500hp if you use a Victor Jr. intake and a 750 carb. I am VERY happy with it. Not good for air conditioning, or brakes for that matter, but still streetable. Had to lose the 2500 stall for a 3200. I liked it because I knew everything would work together, I'm not as experienced as some of the guys on this site. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll help as much as I can.

wellp i think hopefully by the end of next summer im gonna go ahead and buy this top end http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D2096&autoview=sku (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D2096&autoview=sku)
and this bottom end http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ESP%2DB13004L03053&autoview=sku (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ESP%2DB13004L03053&autoview=sku)
i was looking and the top end is about good for 1500 to 6500 rmp range
would u guys run a stall on that?
u how big of a carb should i run?
think i would get 460 hp like it says with that combo??
if it does do 400+ would a 350 tranny hold up to that plus a decent shift kit so my head can hit the back window when i grab 2nd or should i look into getting a 400 or something else??
now i wish i had about 3000 saved up.... ;)

At least a 2500 stall
750 CFM Carb
I'd be sure to use a small base circle cam too.
