Title: PTO on 82 4-spd.
Post by: gmfrance on December 06, 2003, 09:12:00 pm
I have an 82 C30 that used to be a wrecker and it has the 117mm trans. (what the manuals call it) I believe built by Muncie. It has a PTO on the left side of the case and I would like to remove it if possible. Is this a mater of just unbolting the unit and putting on the standard plate or is there more to it?

That transmission is more commonly referred to as a SM465.  As far as removing the PTO your dead on, just unbolt it and slap a cover plate over the hole.  You should be able to get a PTo cover plate at any junkyard.  The ones off of chevy transfer cases should work as well, if you have trouble getting one off of a tranny.

That's good news. The problem might be finding a stock plate. I farm and there aren't many junk yards around. The nearest is 35 miles +/- away and he's rather hard to deal with. Doesn't like to remove parts like that off an item. Would something like a piece of 1/4" plate steel properly drilled and with the face milled flat work with a bead of RTV for a gasket?

I have no use for it and I don't want the actuator knob sticking out of the hump cover.
