Title: quick question
Post by: cochese on July 07, 2007, 05:46:05 pm

hello-
can anyone please tell me the difference between an oil pressure sending unit and an oil pressure switch.  i'm trying to figure out which one my truck should have, or if they're two separate things and my truck should have both.  i'm trying to trouble-shoot an oil pressure problem.

my truck is an 86 c-10, 305.

thanks.

if it has a guage then it has a sending unit, if it has a light then it is a switch.

thanks, that makes sense.  can you give me an idea where it is?  i looked around the back of the block by the distributor, but i didn't see it. do i have to take the distributor off to get to it?  thanks.

Look to the right of the distributor, it should be a bell shaped housing connected to a 45 bend.

If memory serves me correctly it is right underneath the intake manifold on the back of the block or right below the head on the passenger side, don't remember right off without being right in front of one.

thanks for the info.  i finally found it next to the distributor as chris said.  now i have to figure out how to remove it.  it's pretty far back, and a tight squeeze.  any suggestions?  do i need to remove the dist. cap to get to it?  thanks.

Just use a short 1/2" or 9/16" wrench on the flats and unscrew it. Becareful not to break off the brass fitting in the block.

Check where the wire plugs into the top...there should be hexes there you should be able to take a wrench and turn it there...you could even be able to use a socket and ratchet.
