Title: Manifold question
Post by: eventhorizon66 on September 09, 2007, 01:06:50 pm
Is there any problem removing/reinstalling a pair of intake manifold bolts without replacing gaskets, after the manifold has been torqued down in sequence?  I want to swap the No. 1 bolt with the No. 7 bolt (numbered in order of torque sequence).  I know this is a dumb question but this is my first swap and I don't want all the fun of a leaking intake gasket.

Oh and the reason I want to swap them out: they are ARP bolts, which means there are four bolts (intended for the center four) with longer heads on them.  Like a knucklehead I messed up and put a short one on the No. 1 spot.  Its purely for cosmetic reasons, as I did manage to torque it down without stripping the head.

I had to re-use the gaskets on my 350 a while back.  It worked, but I'm not sure if it was the right thing to do or not.  I had a bad leak, so I was going to replace my gaskets, but when I got it on, I realized that they wouldn't fit my intake, so I had to use what was aleady there.  I just dabbed on a little rubber gasket stuff(not sure what it was called) in a few places[around the bolts]. Like I said, I don't know if it was right, but that's what we did to get by until we got another gasket.

You'll be fine if you are just swapping a couple of bolts around.  Just don't loosen a bunch of them.

You will be fine swapping those out, as 1976Scottsdale said, only remove the 2 you want to swap.

Thanks for the replys.  This eases my worries about ruining the gasket.

I'm just going to piggyback on this thread so i don't have to make a new one....can i remove the intake manifold without removing the thermostat housing first? I would assume that it should be fine, but i figured that i should double-check first.

You don't have to remove it if you don't want to.  Make sure you get the water out of the intake passage/ below the heads before you pull it off...

Haha i have yet another question. Does anyone know of a good (fairly accurate) site for cross-checking your intake manifold casting number?
And by the way i found out my engine is a 350 out of either a '77 Impala, or a '75 Corvette. (The previous owners pulled out the 454 due to issues it was having and put in the 350.)
