Title: Where to mount electric fuel pump?
Post by: team39763 on September 14, 2007, 02:43:34 pm
I got a fuel cell that I plan to install just like the tech article on here, but will that cause problems with my fuel pump?  My fuel pump inlet will be parallel or above the outlet of the fuel cell if I mount it like that..  I wanted my cell to gravity feed the pump rather than having the pump pull the fuel from the cell.  So should I just mount the cell in the bed?

As long as you don't lose your prime it will be fine just about anywhere.

The electric pumps will push better than they will pull. The closer to the tank the better.

I got the cell mounted finally.  I'll check on fuel pump placement in the afternoon.  I think I can mount it about 12" from the outlet of the cell.

The mechanical fuel pump pulls from the tank also and is located up @ the engine. I've mounted the electrical pumps on the frame or crossmember behind the cab and never had a problem with one. I would put it where it looks nice and is easily accesible.

Most aftermarket electrical pumps are pusher pumps all factory mechanical pumps are puller pumps.  They do make puller pumps to feed the pushers actually.  The pushers should be mounted as close to the tank as possible and should be gravity fed from the tank.  As long as you can get the pump inlet below or equal height you should be ok.  If the cell you have has a lowered inlet, you can mount the pump even with the outlet of the tank.

Ok I think I got it mounted in a good place.  I put the pump on that crossbrace near the rear bumper.  It's about 4 or 5 inches from the outlet of the cell.  It's just enough room to fit a little fuel filter.  Now I just have to figure out how to wire it up.  Thanks ya'll.
