Title: Oil Pressure
Post by: dtr118 on September 16, 2007, 09:28:30 am
I have a 77 GMC stepside 2wd, I swapped the 350 with a 327.  I got the engine to start yesterday but I do not register any oil pressure.  I bought a new oil pressure switch and installed it, still no pressure. I pulled the valve cover off while it was running and there was oil in the valves.  This truck has been sitting in my garage for about 10 years.  Is there a chance the gage went bad?  Is there another way I can check for Oil pressure?...thanks  This is my first engine install, so I am just learning as I go.

get a mechanical pressure guage and hook it up under the hood and check it.  Was the factory guage working before?

You can pick up a mechanical gauge at any autoparts store.   Get a cheep one you can stick back in your tool box. (use it as a tool)
Hook it up where the pressure switch is plumbed in.
When you remove the switch check for any blockage in the block, use a flashlight and look into the hole.
Make sure no sealer is in the switch, hole inside should be clear of foreign matter.

You can always check your pump by putting on a new oil filter.  Turn the engine.  See if oil filter fills w/ oil.   Foolproof way to see if oil pump works when putting in a new engine.
