Title: 700R4 Swap
Post by: 76_Scottsdale on September 23, 2007, 07:07:07 pm
I finally scraped up enough dough to do my 700R4 swap. I'm swaping in a 700R4 in place of my Sm465, and keeping the NP205. I ordered the tranny and all the parts from www.bowtieoverdrives.com on the 21st. Hopefully everything should be here by October 1st and I can start putting it in. I started yesterday by tearing out my exhaust. Tomorrow I'll start tearing out the old tranny and clutch pedal and other misc. stuff. I'll be sure to post some more pics when I start putting it in. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks again.

Well the new tranny came in today. It came so fast I haven't even had time to finish taking out the old one. I'll post some pics later.

PS Anyone interested in purchasing a very nice chrome shifter rod for a SM465 or an entire very good condition newly rebuilt SM465?

Does anyone know exactly how much longer a the 700R4 is than the SM465, ie how far will the crossmember actually be moved back?

you can measure the crossmember bolt holes in the trans to the front of housing on both and measure the difference in the two. the 700R4 tranny is exactly 23.4 inches in overall length. the SM465 trans is 12 inches in overall length. hope this helps, good luck, I'm curious as to how it turns out, get a picture underneath when finished if you can.

the SM465 trans is a cast iron four speed manual with a granny low first gear of 6.55:1. can be found in 68-91 GM trucks. there cheap, short, reliable and parts are easy to come by. if you dont mind shifting then its ONE of GM's best manual transmissions.

So if everything's going to get moved back almost 12 inches, is there anyway to modify the NP205 transfer case shifter so that it's not underneath my seat?

The 700R4 tranny is exactly 23.4 inches in overall length. the SM465 trans is 12 inches in overall length.
The 12" isn't including the bellhousing with is about 10" long (off the top of my head).

So theoreticly the tcase should only be moved back a few more inches. Once I mate the tcase up to the tranny i'll take some measurments so i can trim the shifter hole as needed but this is good because when the tcase is in low it's already close to my seat and i don't want to have take out my bench.

you wont have to take out bench. i have checked my 79' and you will definitely have to move the crossmember back but i was just giving overall lengths, sorry didn't mean to confuse you there. you don't have to move back that far. its more time consuming but i assembled trans and tcase together and measured on the ground then the crossmember, you can get a pretty good visual by just looking under your truck. having some form of trans jack also helps more then a bunch of guys because you can position it in up to the motor with the crossmember bolted up to trans.

yeah I definitely am going to mate them up on the ground with the crossmember on and raise it up and bolt bellhousing up and then check for squareness on the crossmember, and then drill the holes. thanks for the help. i just got my wisdom teeth cut out today so i won't be starting until sunday at the earliest but i'll be sure to post some pics. Thanks again.

76_scottsdale how are the shift ratio's on that 4 spd?.....on mine between 2nd and 3rd its very long......meaning when I shift into 3rd the rpm's drop dramatically......

Bench will be in the same spot, the T-case shifter should be in about the same spot too. if that is what you are refereing too.  The crossmember will probably need to move, but as Kojak said, I don't think it is much.

Well I got the drivelines out and tore out the old clutch pedal assembly, what a PITA!. Tomorrow the tranny/tcase will come out and I'll start cleaning the underside all up, and put new seals in the Tcase.

Hey BogHog,
Referring to the shift ratios on the tranny, yeah the 2nd and 3rd shifts are quite a ways apart. That's how they all are. If you don't want it to bog you just have to wind it up a ways in 2nd.

I'm glad I won't have to move the bench right now. I'm planning on bucket seats later as time/money permit.

I've also hit my first snag. I need to get a short TH350 tailhousing for my 700R4 to bolt it up to the 4x4 adapter. I've looked online but I'm having a tough time finding one. They're $319 new from GM so I'd like to find a used one. If anyone has one or knows where to get one it would be much appreciated. It's about 3.5" long and came on all the TH350s that were mated up to NP205s from 71-79.

Thanks again.

Ok I see on the tranny shift.....next question.......a 700R4 will not adapt to a NP 205 so you have to use a tail housing off a TH350 put it on and then it will adapt?.......or do some model 700R4 adapt to a NP205 Transfer?....
Title: Re: 700R4 Swap
Post by: 76_Scottsdale on October 02, 2007, 12:03:49 am
Well my NP205 has a 10 spline male input shaft because it was mated to my SM465, so my new 700R4 already has the Advance Adapters 10 spline female out put shaft, but it needs the little tail housing cover for the rear to bolt up to the 4x4 adapter and then the Tcase. Let me know if you want the tranny, I'll take some pics once it's out.

Just seeing if anyone has found one of these laying around. All I need is the short tailhousing section of any junk TH350 that was mated to a NP205. It's 4 bolts on the tranny side and a large odd-shaped bolt pattern on the other end.

DUH

I finally figured out exactly what I need. I need the actual 4x4 adapter from a TH350 to NP205 set up.

These pictures show the one I need on the left, and the old SM465 one on the right. I thought these adapters had coupler sleeves in them that were 27 spline for the TH350s, but apparently you can get them without sleeves or take the sleeves out because my tailshaft has the coupler built in to mate up to the 10 spline NP205. I've heard you can find these for about $250 from the dealer, I will go and see tomorrow, but if anyone has one of these for sale, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Well my local dealer wants $390 bucks for the adapter! NO WAY. I found one on ebay, but if anyone on here has one, I'd like to get it from you guys. Anyways the old tranny's coming out today so I'll post some pics.

*EDIT*
I just bought the one from Advance Adapters, should be here monday. Thanks for looking though Boghog.

Yeah that pretty much ties up all my loose ends except for I'm waiting for the seal and gasket kit for the NP205, and some polyurethane mounts. Any suggestions on tearing apart the NP205 to put new seals in it? I heard it's fairly easy.

That is ok....I'm glad you got one.....i'm still going to look for it anyway....I need to get my parts in order......I just got a tranny for free from a friend and I am going to have it checked out but I still might be interested in your trans if this one needs alot of work.....

Well the old tranny is finally out. It was dark when I got done but I'll post some pics tomorrow. I'm going to clean off the whole unit (very dirty/greasy), and then seperate the tcase. The tcase will get some new seals this week and the SM465 gets a spot in the local thrifty nickel. Comes with 6 month old clutch package and flywheel if anyone's interested. This is the week that some real progress starts getting made once all my parts get here.

Got the new tranny in and the crossmember all bolted to the tranny and mocked up for the new holes. Today I will drill the holes and bolt up the crossmember and also bolt up the tcase. I'll post pics tonight I promise :)

Got the crossmember all bolted up and started working on the torque converter lock up wiring and wiring in the tranny temp gauge. Tomorrow I'll bolt up the Tcase so I can measure for the drive lines and drop them off this weekend to get lengthened/shortened and balanced.

Well I set up the entire TV system and the drivelines will be done Tuesday. I decided to put in bucket seats because I wanted the shifter between them; it didn't look good anywhere else. Tomorrow I will run the cooling lines and install the tranny cooler. Should be running this week. Once it's out of my tiny shop I'll post some undercarraige pics of how it looks.
