Title: rebuilding 454
Post by: 78chev2bnice on November 12, 2007, 12:28:16 pm
Im currently collecting some information as to how much it would cost to rebuild the big block.  It was running when the guy pulled it he said that it just started smoking really bad on the one side but it still ran.  He figured it was a valve or a hole in the piston.  i want to rebuild so that its fairly powerful but yet very strong and reliable. Any information would be appreciated!

All I can say is you'll have to actually take it apart to determine what you have and what you need to do. How much do you want to build it? What is it's intended use? Figure you'll spend at least $1200 bucks

I'd be inclined to just remove the cylinder heads. Then you can see if a piston is shot --unless it is a ring issue.  Have the heads revalved,etc...that may solve your problem.  If not, you already have the heads redone.  It is just a pain to remove the engine again if that didn't solve the problem.

$1200?  Gee, my buddy just got done with his bare bones rebuild, and he broke $1800 without blinking.  One thing I learned in high school was that big blocks aint cheap.  EVER.

The advantage of running a BBC over a SBC is that there is a wider variety of factory head casting heads than will make a number of different combinations and all of the factory components are alot beefier than SBC parts

Start out by getting the casting numbers them go to www.mortec.com  (http://www.mortec.com) to find out the details. Depending on the casting numbers you really do not need to get exotic parts.

2 bolt block Will work great for any thing any street power and light nitrous.

You will most likely have dished pistons if they are in good shape you can get a set of closed chamber 396 heads 106 cc or 98cc and raise the compression and you can still find them fairly easy and cheap.

781 heads came of trucks from 73-early 80's and 049 came in cars from 72-late 70's they are a great big chamber head 119 - 124 cc but to get 10-1 compression you need to run a dome piston.

if your current engine has high milage but it still runs fine rebuild the heads, change cam and timing chain then slap on a good intake and you'll be more than happy with the power.

My current combo that is in my dually is a rebuilt set of 781 heads with 2.08 intake valves and 1.88 exhaust valves. .250 dome pistons, zero decked block, cast rods, cast crank, fully balanced rotating assembly, Hyd camshaft, roller tip rockers, and aluminum intake.

The engine that I am building for my stepside is a 489 stroker, Which is a 4 bolt block, steel 4.250 crank, steel 6.385 rods, forged flat top pistons, comp cams solid roller cams, and cast Merlin rectangular heads wi 2.30 intake and 1.88 exhaust. This will be topped off with a procharger.

northernautoparts.com is the cheapest I can find.  I use them for all of my rebuilds for my engines as well as for customers.
