Title: HEADERS update-Dynomax
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on December 02, 2007, 11:32:04 am
Bought the WLK86118 headers from DYNOMAX as suggested by some on this site. The fit was fine. The ceramic coating was the WORST I've ever seen. I'm hoping that this was an isolated incident because I thought Dynomax made a nicer product. I sent them back to JEGS and ordered the PATRIOT Clipsters. They are a 3/4 length like the Dynomax but they have 3/8 flanges (Dynomax is 5/16), 1 5/8 pipe (Dynomax is 1 1/2) and 3 inch collectors (Dynomax is 2 1/2). I'll post pics when I get them and let everyone know how they fit. I know this is a big topic for alot of us. So, I bit the bullet again and I'm trying another header.

Wow, that is strange.  Based on what I have seen it would be an isolated incident.  Post the others when you get them.

I have used both of these brands and actually was happy with them both.
But the dynomax seemed easier to find at the time i was looking.
But this was for a old Monte Carlo i had. ::)

Finally received the PATRIOT CLIPSTER headers. They are very nice. ONE PROBLEM for those of you looking for the shorter header;
the drivers side barely hits the motor mount bracket by 1/4 inch. Otherwise they fit great with plenty of room for 90 degree plug boots. I'll grind on the mount bracket a little when I get a chance and post the pics. I have a 2 qt oil filter and a Powermaster mini starter and no clearance problems there either. What I really like is the fact that these are 1 5/8 pipe and 3 inch collector. The Dynomax's are 1 1/2 and 2 1/2. The rom around the plugs is better than Dynomax also. I hope this helps some of you.

Here's some pics of the Patriot Clipsters installed. Working on the rest of the exhaust now. I also put in a tubular transmission crossmember and ditched the o.e. monstrosity. It made it much easier to run exhaust and it looks much cleaner.

I forgot to show the pic of how the clamshell part of the mount had to be clearanced. So, here it is;

Does anyone think that these that the Patriot Clipster style headers that 79SHORTWIDE used will fit in a 4x4 application? If not I was wondering if anyone knew another type of shorty header that will fit in 76 K20 application. I know the ones for 88-newer fit from VileZambonie and others, but I was looking for a nice set of ceramic coated ones. Thanks.

They make the 88 up style in ceramic coated and stainless steel. I have a pair of both that fit small block.

The stainless shorty's from Summit are $750 bucks

The headers I initially bought for my truck were supposed to fit 88-95 Chevy but the drivers side collector dropped right into the corner of the frame--making it IMPOSSIBLE to get a pipe to hook up. Possibly they were designed differently than what everyone else is using or maybe they were made wrong. I don't know--but they wouldn't work for me. The Clipsters are nice but took some work with the clamshell part of the motor mount. Nothing major--just had to enlarge the existing notch that was there. Here's a pic;

Yeah the ones you got aren't the same as the ones I posted. The only clearance issue you may have with those ebay ones is near the 02 bung but it's nothing 5 seconds with a die grinder won't take care of.

I like those stainless and the price is right too. Does the stainless coating hold up well and did it turn blue/rainbowy right away?

Vile,

Is the outlet on those stainless headers 2 1/2"?
Will those stainless headers look good after 1 winter? Because I drive my pickup year-round and was just wondering if they hold up. I am seriously about ready to buy those because they look nice, the price is right, and I want shorty headers with a gasket-less connection and I can't seem to find them anywhere else. Thanks again.

I think they're 2.75" but I can't recall off the top of my head.

Did you just run 2 1/2" pipe to them and flare the end enough to fit onto them?
