trying to find out a way to visually look at a 305 or a 350 and know what you have.
Also any other ideas on how to figure out what motor i have in this truck.
It is a 86 4x4. the guy i bought it from swears it is a 350. but then he is defently not the sharpest knife in a drawer.
Thanks for any help in advance

Pull the engine code off the engine.

Look at the starter bolt pattern.
350-off set two bolts--one in front, diagonal from the other.
305--two bolts in line paralell with the end of the block.

I pulled the starter off my old 305 and bolted it to the new 350 Goodwrench motor I put in this summer. Both offset style. What's up with that?

Cant really go off the bolt pattern of the starter. pull the casting numbers off the block, behind the driver side head. Goolge the numbers, "chevrolet casting number 3970010" for example. Usually you can gather motor c.i info, yr, and vehicle it was factory in. using the other casting numbers and marks, found various other places on the block, you can get the manufactured date, and plant info.

or if its the original motor check the sticker that has the emissions on it and it should say either 5.0 or 5.7

heard sowhere that on a 305 the dipstick is on the passanger side and a 350 is on the drivers side.

This is a pretty old post but the info you were given is wrong.
