For a Q-Jet I'd heard said that there is an appratus that you can purchase that would attach to the choke, where the black cap that's held on by the three screws currently is, and that this would allow manual hook up.
Does anyone know of such an animal ?

You can hook up a manual choke but why would you want to do that?

Manual chokes are vastly more reliable than any automatic choke, electric or vacuum. Those kits you spoke of are available at almost any parts store. For a truck, you want the one with a 9 ft cable, or, what I do is buy a heavy duty tractor choke/PTO cable and cut it to the size I need and junk the cable they include with the kit (its pretty light duty and flimsy). Its been awhile since I installed one on a qjunk, I'd have to go find it in my junk parts bin and look at it to see how I did it..I did it differently than the instructions said to, but I think the instructions are perfectly fine, I just cut a corner or two for simplicity considering I only needed it for about 3 months.
The only problem with a manual choke, is atleast once a year, you should pull the cable off the carb, straighten it out, and spray some motorcycle chain/cable lube down the sleeve. I always cover the outer part of the cable in heat shrink tubing to assure no dust gets in the cable, and also to keep the grease from leaking out while you're spraying.

Why do you laugh? Every automatic choke I've ever used or known anyone using has malfunctioned in some way at some point..I've never had or heard of a hand choke malfunctioning, except the one on the '84 i gave my dad..it was a holley with the plastic cable bracket, and the choke only malfuntioned because the air cleaner caught fire and melted the bracket before the fire was extinguished.

In my case the automatic choke won't work because the heat riser apparatus is not present. I've nothing to hook up to the choke to make it work other than to go manual. I've a universal kit coming in the AM that I'm going to try.

Not too long ago, there was another thread on this very issue. described an electric choke hook up to a qjet, with factory wiring options. That's what I would do, personally rather not have to keep up with if I left it closed or open.

I pulled the carb intake off my 78 Jimmy, I think it has the hose hookup that you need, want me to check? I am converting to TPI and I don't need it.

I would go find an intake with the factory heat spring choke on it, sometime referred to as a remote choke. The Weiand Stealth intake will have a boss for it, or at least they used to. When you use this setup, you need only get in, tap the gas, and crank. If it wears out they sell them on ebay. Just drill out the mounting screw and replace with a sheetmetal screw. No vacuum, no wires, just a spring and a rod.. and one of those cute little e-clips.

I hate automatic chokes. I have one but it is so unreliable and shuts off when it shouldn't. A manual choke will give you complete control which I need for my cold winter months. The next carb I buy will have a manual choke.

Yes I have tried on seperate occasions to no avail. The biggest thing that erks me is when it is on high idle and I want to kick it down just a little when it starts warming, it turns off and the cold motor runs like crap. Like I said, next carb I buy is going to be a manual choke, and I will never have the problem again.

To bring this thread full circle, I bought the universal kit from NAPA and installed it. I discarded the cable that came with it for a 9ft heavy duty one. I also had a stronger cable holder made as the stock one was very flimsy. All in all it works well, should prove more reliable than the automatic. For my part when I'm driving my old truck it's an event any way so to forget to open the choke isn't a problem.
Oh and I got to test it two days ago as it was real cold here in South Mississippi...worked like a charm.

Glad you got it setup the way you want..I got so used to choking my '84, that I forgot how to use the electric chokes..I looked like a fool starting my '83 when I wanted to hear it run before I bought it.
