Well so far this winter I have had a rear outer wheel bearing let go and mow the stub. Built it back up with weld filed it down to fit a new bearing, new inner, outer, and new seal. New rear u joint on rear shaft. Tail light wiring repairs, one new light assembly, and new 7 prong trailer plug. New front tires, brake pads, one caliper retainer clip, and bolt. New heater core and heater hoses ( at 5:00 AM in the middle of plowing my route. ) Then last night the same axle seal let go was up till 3:00 this morning fixing that. Plus the typical stuff on the plow and sander, and general maintenace etc.
Gotta love the plow business!

At least you are replacing stuff because it is getting used :D. I am replacing stuff on something that isn't even running yet.

Guess what? I posted this, left to get sand and go sand some calls. Not my normal customers but they call and wanted sand, they either do it themselves or their plow guy only plows. Anyway I got about a 1/4 mile from the pit and it felt like the transfer case popped into neutral. I tried shifting it back in but it was already in 2x. I looked in my mirror and the inside dual was about 3" out past the side of my body!!!
The outer wheel bearing gave it up. I spent most of the day with a buddies help fixing that on the side of the road, while it was snowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well my theory is that there is crap built up in the bottom of the axle tube. Preventing the oil getting out to the bearings. So for a cave man fix to get me through the next few days because we just had snow last night, supposed to get more tomorrow night and Sun. into Mon. too. Any way I am going to drill a hole in the cover, add about a half quart of oil, plug it with silicone, and hope she holds until we have a week of good weather. I am going to swap the whole rearend as both spindles are kinda boogered up now.

That stinks! Side of the road repairs are bad enough and then you have Snow! YUK!

I took it apart last night, got it back together around 11:00 PM. Since everything got chewed up in there I seamed to forget when we did the road side fix there is supposed to be a big washer between the nut, and the bearing! DER. Well for a washer because I wasn't about to walk through thigh deep snow and then tear another rearend apart top get one. I had an extra nut so I ground the threads out of it and ground it to about half its thickness! So I still got to cave man something. We shall see how well it holds up. Have a lead on a couple rearends to swap it out.

Well I can add new front springs to the list. Heard a clunking noise near the end of my route. Got home started looking things over, left front main leaf snapped in half right behind the u bolt plate!

I guess I cant expect much more from an antique truck!!! I plow 38 driveways. 2 of them are over an 1/8 mile long. 3 are small apt. 3 and 4 family unit places.
A guy in town I know works at a spring shop. I just got home from his house. New 4 leaf front packs, new u bolts, all new hardware, shackles, and upper shackle bushings. list just shy of $600 his / my cost $370.

I still can't believe these trucks are antiques. I remember them when they were NEW. Dang, I'm getting old ::)
I've ridden in plenty of them with family and friends as a younger lad. Many a fond memory.....

I have one 1 ton parts truck and about 15 1/2 and 3/4 ton parts trucks. Some things just are not worth using used stuff. I have a 3/4 ton with brand new heavy duty front springs in it. Problem is it buried under 4 feet of snow. I am swapping the axles out of the parts 1 ton while I am at it. 4:56s.

Sorry, I was just saying to upgrade to heaver duty parts. But that upgrade is a nice one. ;D
