Title: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on January 01, 2008, 11:51:02 am
It's getting there. Made the exhaust, put on the Patriot Clipster headers, the Powermaster starter, more pieces of the serpentine system, the GMPP water pump, Wysco 65000 volt distributor, swivel water neck, Jegs tranny crossmember and Auto Meter braided steel oil pressure hose. Also changed out the chrome 10 inch Chevrolet air filter for the 14x6 Summit with reuseable element. My goal for the truck to be finished is July for the TEXAS HEATWAVE SHOW. It's alot to finish in 7 months.

Looks sweet,
what tranny are you using and what rearend and gears?May i ask what part number is that crossmember?I likw to use that instead of the flat 1 we usually use.

thanks
pat

It's a TH350. I had a it set up with extra Red Alto clutches and steels and a Stage 2 shift kit running a Hughes 2500 stall that I hope is enough. The rearend is a 12 bolt with an Eaton 3.73 posi. The crossmember is a Jegs universal. You have to cut it down to fit, weld on the tabs to the frame and the tranny mount pad to the crossmember. It's number 550-40107.

Nice work!

Looks like its gonna be a nice Truck!  Keep us posted with the updates.

What color you gonna go with for the body?  Interior mods?

Your exhaust setup looks real smooth and well thought-out.  And that motor is looking pretty slick too.  Nice job.

Thanx for the compliments! Still undecided on the exterior color (s). I'd love black but the body has to be PERFECT and I'm no body man. Might go silver or silver and black. Even thought of a white lower and silver upper. Any opinions?  I need a computer program that will let me play with color choices......anyone know of one? The interior will be black carpet, probably black leather buckets with gray inserts in cloth. Mostly stock appearance otherwise. Autometer Ultralite gauges, B&M shifter and MAYBE a custom console.
Believe it or not, part of the exhaust (the mandrel bent pieces) are cut from new Saturn Sky cars. They're stainless 2 1/2 pipe on those cars. Customers upgrade their exhaust to the performance package and they scrap the original system. So, I got them and used the bent pieces. Took some cutting but it worked outr well. The H pipe is a Flowmaster kit and the mufflers are obvioulsy Flows. Haven't decided on any type of turndowns or tips. Have to wait til I fire it up.

I finally made my Taylor wires and added the holders/seperators. I still need more seperators to put on close to the distributor to make it neater. And I got the power steering pump and hoses to work. So, it's mounted. Alternator is next. Wanting a 140A single wire. Might make a vacuum line for the tranny modulator to the carb today out of metal brake line. I'm planning to bend one up and secure it so it looks nice. Plans in the near future are to mount the battery along the back side on the frame (inboard) with a drop out battery box, then run the cables.

Those are sweet looking valve covers. Where did you get them from? ;D
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on February 03, 2008, 12:31:58 pm
Thanx for the compliments. The valve covers came from Jegs. You can get them there or through GMPP (g.m. performance parts--any gm dealer). I think they're gonna be a pain to keep nice though  :'(

Trying real hard to make things look nice and neat and make it as simple as possible to work on it when need be.

If only I had more money than time!! I wanted it done for the Texas Heat Wave show in July but I seriously doubt it. Just too much to do still and not enough $$$$$$

I'm accepting donations........... :)

Thanx!
Had a local alternator rebuilding company convert my stock alternator to the 140 amp single wire. They did it for $130.00 plus tax. Not bad I guess. And I received my a/c compressor delete bracket/pulley so I can go ahead and install the serp belt, fire this thing and add the a/c later on. I did bend up lines from the carb to tranny modulator and one for the vacuum advance. And put the Stage 8 locking headers bolts on. Also re-did the p/s hoses a little. I think it looks cleaner. I'll try to post some new pics this weekend once the front of the engine is finally buttoned up.

JJSZABO--I don't envy you. That's still on my list of things to do as well. Maybe it'll be fun HA!
Whose kit are you using? I'm really leaning towards the Ron francis package---the issue I see (with any of them) is getting all the modifications added in from the supplier. I think the average $500.00 kit could get ALOT more expensive after you order the mods. And it seems that we have to re-use alot of the old connectors or find new ones. I don't think they come in the kits.

LORNE--Thank you ! Believe me the compliments help keep me motivated. I should have some pics up this weekend of the latest work.
Sometimes I wish I wasn't so anal about making things look nice. It ends up costing alot more $$$$ and takes alot more time.

How's the body on this truck?
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on March 01, 2008, 12:30:22 pm
Let's just say it's getting there  :D
I bought new doors and fenders last year. I replaced both front floor pans, both inner rockers, both cab corners and both fron cab supports. The bed is useable but I'm looking for a better one. It needs a lot of work. I'm not a body man and learning as I go. I hate it !
Otherwise it's great! LOL. It was a $1200 truck when I bought it if that says anything. Still looking for a good deal on a cowl hood also.
Wanting to take the cab to be sandblasted in and out so I can attempt priming and smoothing. My driver truck was wrecked and now I don't have a truck to pull a trailer to do this kind of work. I can't sandblast in my neighborhood so I have to take it somewhere. I really don't want to spend forever sanding the whole cab. really wishing I knew someone in my area to trade out some body work for mechanical work. No luck yet.
Vile, your truck is looking great! I'm envious!
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: VileZambonie on March 01, 2008, 12:50:19 pm
Thanks, how come you can't sand blast in your neighborhood?
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on March 01, 2008, 02:09:08 pm
Because of the mess. To the best of my knowledge I could only use a portable blaster. The blast media has to end up somewhere so I'd have to do it outside. I don't want that mess all over my engine, frame and inside my garage. Anyway, there's a homeowners association here. They gripe about everything. And I have some neighbors that aren't as enthusiastic as I am about hot rods. (They're gonna love me when I fire it up for the first time and haev to break in the cam  ;D) I'm surprised no one has complained when I'm grinding, cutting etc. For what it'll cost to buy everything, I could probably take it and have it done.

Serpentine system-With Compressor delete setup for now.
140 amp Single wire alternator. GMPP aluminum water pump.

Stage 8 locking header bolts.
Thanx for looking!

That thing is gonna be sweet! What did you use for a serpentine system?
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on March 02, 2008, 10:01:59 am
Thanx Vile!
After researching the systems available from GMPP, Summit etc, I realized it's all the same as a 91 Z-28. I found the main brackets and some misc stuff on Craigslist a year ago. Then I started piecing the rest together. It helps that I used to work for an A/C Delco distributor and now work for a GM dealership as a Parts Manager. Once the cab is on and done, I'll worry about A/C and the compressor. I figure this way that I have now will allow me to run it and check for problems etc. Still a ways to go before firing it up. I want to get as much done as possible before mounting any body parts.

Simply Beautiful!! Wish I could spend that kind of quality time on my machine. Your setup is gonna look great.

I hate to bash but I think you need to know. The port your using on the carb for the trans modulator is a timed vacume port usually best for the distributor. I don't think It'll work for the modulator. The modulator needs to see manifold vacume. Also your serpentine belt is installed incorrectly. It goes to the bottom of the crank from the air pump, around the crank, around the water pump, then down to the steering pump, and up to the alternator, across to the a/c under the tensioner, and back down to the air pump. That accellerator cable bracket your using is real nice lookin and makes for fairly easy adjustments but trust me your gonna find yourself tossin it in the trash someday. I've found a certian combo of gm accelerator/tranny cable brackets that work real well for a Holley from the boneyard, I didn't write it down though so I'm not much help there. Alright enough bashin, I'm just jealous.

Nevermind that modulator crap I was talkin. I just looked back and put my foot in my mouth.
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on March 02, 2008, 11:32:05 am
I don't get that much time to work on it. I work 11 hour days. I have about 2 years into this money pit! LOL
Before I hooked up the vacuum advance and tranny modulator, I checked the sheet that came with the Holley. I THOUGHT I was correct. Maybe not.
As for the belt routing; I looked at the JEGS website and there's is like mine. Although it doesn't look like we have the same lower ideler that replaces an air pump. As a matter of fact, it doesn't look like their belt even touches the idler.....I know that the grooved side of the belt has to run in a grooved pulley and the back side goes against a smooth pulley. I don't have an air pump. It (temporarily) has two idlers--one for where the air pump would go if I had one and one to replace the a/c compressor until I get one. If you have a pic of a different routing, I'd appreciate it.
I've got my doubts on the bracket for the kickdown also. I had it and the o.e. cable already so figured I'd try it. I'm still contemplating the Lokar stuff--it's just pricey.
No "bashing" taken. I'm ALWAYS open to suggestions and ideas. I definetly don't know it all.

Are you not using the passengers inner bolt (near the intake) on the serp setup.  I am about to bolt mine in, and I am debating on drilling that hole.  I have serveral people said it could be eliminated, but.....
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: Pushrod on March 02, 2008, 12:26:48 pm
Your vacume is fine. When I first looked at it, it looked like the modulator vacume was on the upper passenger side port. At second glance I realized I was wrong and stuck my foot in my mouth.

Heres a belt pic

CAPTKAOS,

You have dang good eyes! No, I'm not using that bolt. I was afraid of drilling and tapping that head. They're OLD--and RARE 041X castings from 1969--and have a TON of machine work in them. I'm still looking for the support brackets that run from the compressor to header bolt (with spacer) and the alternator to header bolt. My problem is I don't want to eliminate my Stage 8 locking bolts and make it look hokey. I might make my own type of support brackets with hopes of making the rest of the system nice and sturdy. Still working on that part. I'll post pics when I get to that stage of the game.
Title: Re: My 79 Shortwide
Post by: 79SHORTWIDE on March 02, 2008, 12:36:41 pm
PUSHROD,

My set up routes similar but not the same.  Your pic doesn't have an idler on the passenger side lower bracket.
Here's another shot than I posted before (I think).......
Does anyone know of a nice looking "plug" or "cap" for this hole? I've converted to
a single wire off of the threaded stud on the back and no longer need this plug.
Oh, and YES, I see the brass pipe plug on the water pump and all the others are black anodized. It's only TEMPORARY till I run
the heater hoses. LOL.
CAPTKAOS,
As for using that hole we talked about; If you look at the two unused holes on the front on the water pump-then look to the left (in the pic) to the bolt (directly under the large a/c delete idler)---the old style alternator bracket that bolts to those 3 holes will go right on with custom made spacers and a longer bolt under that pulley (about 6 1/2 to 7 inche bolt). THINKING about whether that would strengthen it up or if it's just overkill.

Here's the part numbers if you need them.
10105267, 10077579 and the spacers are 12490680 and  12490679.
I really haven't looked too hard for them yet. I can at work tomorrow and let you know.

Well CAPTKAOS??? Did you drill ?
My head doesn't have a raised boss in that location or I would've done it. I'd hate to go too far and have extra ventilation !  :(

My buddy told me last night that he thinks he has them, I am going to check when I get off here...
I still haven't drilled them.  I may just mock everything up and go from there..

Thanks for the PN.  I can get them from my Dealership supplier if I have to...

If you ever need wholesale on GM stuff and don't have an account or the hookup, just go to:
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com and punch in the part numbers and you will get close to wholesale, plus shipping and handling from NC. I have found that their prices are VERY close to what I can get for wholesale at the local dealership.

everything looks awesome. i used a similar serpetine set up off of my friends 92 chevy truck and it works great. especially for free. i have not looked up those part #'s for supports you gave but they are probably the same. my set up looks just like the one you have. im in the process of recleaning and repainting engine after sitting for 2 yrs then onto finishing bbodywork.

That pic I put up is of a SBC camaro setup that was adapted to fit a BBC. The air-pump/idler pully may be missing but the belt routing is correct. The belt needs to see all that surface space on the crank pully or it will slip routed the way you have it. I know it fits both ways strange enough, I made the mistake of routing one the way yours is pictured a bunch of years ago when I was startin out in the automotive repair biz.

Looking Great 79shortwide!!! ;D

I am using a 18 circuit,  universal Chevy truck, Painless wiring harness that I bought from a board member over at fullsizechevy.com (I got it for 150.00 ).  I am almost done.  I still need to attach the ends and to the distributor wiring and the fuel sending unit.  Then wire up the back lights and I'll be ready to test it out.  I ment to do a writeup on the process, but I want to do a writeup on the Dakota Digital install first.

The harness comes with the fuse panel and all the supply wires.  I still had to use many old ends from my old wiring harnesses.  I had to reuse the old interior, heater, horn and rear light harness.  They were in good shape still - just needed cleaned up.  I had to buy alot of crimp connectors and heat shrink tubing.  So far I have about 35 hours in the wiring, but it is starting to take shape.

PUSHROD,
Looks like you're correct! Like I said before--I'm always open to listen. THANK YOU. I had one of my parts people research the belt routing for the 89-92 Camaro (the system I'm suposed to have) and found 2 versions. I tried both and I need a longer belt. This makes no sense to me because all the serp pieces I've purchased are according to what came on the Camaro. Anyway, going to try a few other belts and re-route it. Will post some updated pics when I get it done.

JJSZABO,
35 hours? That's all? LOL. Like I said before--I'm not really looking forward to it. Keep those pics coming. Your truck is really taking shape. Nice ! If we had a dollar for every hour spent involving our projects, we could probably live off the interest.
