Title: single to dual headlight
Post by: dwg30 on January 03, 2008, 02:28:32 pm
I have an '86 3/4 4x4 that has single headlights and was wanting to change to the dual headlights. I know what parts I need as far as core support, headlight cans, etc. but was wondering on the wiring. Haven't looked at my wiring to the lights yet but is there a pigtail that can be changed or will I have to rewire them or get another harness?

You will need the whole under hood body wire harness from the firewall plug out to the lights.

I changed from 2 to 4 headlights on my 82. All I did was get the high beam lamp connector from a donor truck. Then spliced the green wire, from the connector, to the existing green wire and the black wire, from the connector, to the existing black wire and everything works fine. I did the splice back under the plastic wire loom so no one can see the splice.

BTW, I have a 4 headlight core support that's in very good condition. I'll sell it to you for $30. If you live close, you can pick it up. Email me if your interested.

Simplest anwser would have been for you and dwg30 to have swapped Headlight harnesses, but since he probably already replaced/spliced his, you could pick up an upgraded(Thicker Gauge Wire Etc.) harness for an early '80's Truck from  ...

Unless I'm missing something, switching from 4 lamps to 2 lamps electrically, requires no work. You just plug the dual element wire/plug into the new dual element head lamp. The wire/plug that used to plug into the high beam lamp doesn't need to be plugged into anything. Just tie them back so the wires don't short out. Switching the rad support, head lamp buckets, etc. requires a little more work.
