Title: Starter making noise while driving??
Post by: camo36 on January 06, 2008, 12:31:52 pm
So, yesterday while wheelin, my starter decided to take a crap on me...and after a run to the auto parts store and a trail swap, the truck fired right up.  But it was making some really weird noises that it was not making before the truck shut off and the old starter failed.  So, i'm assuming it has something to do with the new starter...it was dark out, and raining, and freezing...so i'm sure you can understand me not wanting to get back under the truck...

...so i drove it a little while and the starter was just grinding, and then it'd stop at a certain speed (engine rpm) and then it would start again, and then stop...and i was gritting my teeth the whole time because i knew it was bad...but i had no other options at the time...

...soooo...does it need shimming? or what's going on with it? it starts right up...but it'll keep clicking and grinding while running...

thanks guys...

Do you have a sheild on the converter housing? Maybe it's bent and touching the flexplate?

i'm not sure, i'm at work now and so i obviously cant look at it right away...i dont know why all of a sudden it would be bent though...

i'm betting it needs shimming.  the starter bendix is most likely hanging on the flywheel and never returning all the way back into it's housing...a shim should fix it...
