Yes it can be, but it uses a pull instead of a push setup for the clutch.  That alone required a special flywheel that cost about $400 if you want to stay hydraulic. Plus you will need a speedo converter to work with the mechanical stock setup or change to a electronic speedo ($350)  Plus you have to modify the stock crossmember and shorten the driveshaft.

OR if you want mechanical clutch, you have to get an adapter ($600) and the speedo converter.  And if you don't have the clutch setup already, you will need all of that too ($400).

Or you can get a new aftermarket trans here for about $2300: http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/BorgWarner/bwt56.cfm

Short answer is, it will cost you to convert one...

Me too.  I just opted for a use Doug Nash 4+1.  If I was going to spend that kind of cash, I would get a Richmond 6 speed with only 1 OD.

the 6L80 e is the new overdrive tranny used in I believe 96 up trucks, mainly 3/4 tons up.The are very stout. Had one in a work truck with a deisel, truck weight over 13000 pounds, pulled a 16000 pound trailer. we replaced everything but the tranny

Yes, pre-86 motors are different than the 86-99 Vortec motors and way different than LS motors..  Plus you have a mechanical speedo and the 6 speed has a digital sender...
