Title: Stalling in reverse
Post by: euromade on January 30, 2008, 10:53:49 am
I have a funny issue with my 87 5.0 TBI.  When I put it in reverse it stalls on me, every time, unless I play with the gas pedal.  When in D i have absolutelly no issue!  It starts fine, it idles fine, it does not stall on me when I stop at a red light.
Any ideas.  I'd like to use this thing to tow my boat, but with this stalling issue it would be almost impossible to use it at a boat ramp.
Thanks,
New parts installed in the past month or so:
- Fuel filter
- air filter
- plugs and wires
- fuel pump/sending unit.

i'm assuming he has a 700r4 so he doesn't have vacuum lines that control the tranny but check all the vacuum lines on/around the motor to make sure you don't have a leak

Check the throttle body base gasket. With the engine idling mist some carb claean at the base of the throttle body and see if the engine speed changes.

If you don't lose rpms at a stop light the timing is probably ok. When was the tranny fluid changed last? A tranny shop can tell you if you have a bad torque converter. I would expect it to have low power and  hesitation problems with a vacuum leak.
