Title: Transmission Issue
Post by: unbludictable on February 04, 2008, 11:30:23 am
Guys, what causes transmission fluid to come thru the top dip stick?

Transmission is not sliping but when I run it, fluid drips on the ground. When I got ready to check it, fluid was all over the dip stick tube!

At the top or the bottom? If it's coming out of the top it's overfull. At the bottom it's the seal or it's not bolted in securely.  Are you sure that's where it's coming from?

Since this morning, I've had a mechanic to look at it and he thinks it's the trans pump? B/c the pressure is not releasing.

It was full a couple of days ago!

I can see the fluid flowing out of the top! When I first got the truck in Oct. 2006, we put fluid in it while it was running and it came right back out of the top of the dip stick!!

It sounds like you have overfilled it....

Maybe a clogged breather? I've never heard of fluid coming out of the dip stick tube. (unless it IS overfilled)
Almost bought a big block chevelle several years back that had oil spitting out of the engine dipstick tube but that was a ring problem. Had metallic sparkles also! (the oil) :(

We checked the transmission fluid before we filled it. The engine was cold and the trans dipstick was reading low. Wiped it off and checked it again...Low. A third time for good measure...low.

So, I bought a quart of trans fluid, put the funnel in, started to pour it in. Over half the bottle went in and it started flowing out the top!

My question is if it is reading low, very low, why won't it hold 1 qt. of transmission fluid?

check the trans level when hot and running. the fluid expands a lot when up to temp. of course, the only way to drain it now is to drop the pan. might as well change the trans filter while your at it.

Like CCZ said you have to check the level when hot and running.  You need to dump some tranny fluid.

Thought I'd tell a story on myself, I had this gallon jug of dextron, been in the garage for years. Well, just got done changing the trans filter and put the pan back on, so I grab this gallon jug and poured almost a quart before I realized that it was full of old motor oil. I had poured my old oil in there after an oil change and forgot. Yep, had to drop the pan again and clean that crap out.
Cheers, and hang in there, unblu

Thanks! Really!

The truck's got a 350 in it, but I bought a 400 transmission before I bought the truck, so I think I'll just pull the 350 and put the 400 in! An old mechanic told me that this transmission won't get better, just worse!

Do I need to sand it or just degrease it and spray it?

a th350 is a fine transmission..unless you're having actual problems with it not shifting properly, or are putting 400+ hp to it right now, I'd just keep it in there. A th400 will eat up a few extra horsepower, and it really isn't worth the swap on a stock/mild motor UNLESS you're having problems with the 350..

It's has a long hesitation when shifting. It doesn't do when I first start down the road, but when it has been running or going from drive to reverse and back to drive it stalls and hesitates. I'm up dating my carb but I need help!
