Title: Where else can I put my oil sender?
Post by: gmiles on February 05, 2008, 08:43:38 pm
I have a 74 Stepside with a 305 in it. I have an HEI dist. and am installing Dakota Digital gauges. The oil sender for the guages is made by VDO and is HUGE. Can I put  the oil sender someplace else besides the back of the engine by the distributor? There's a small plug just above the oil filter on the block. Can I remove the plug and put the sender there?

thnx
Grady

You can however you can just run a brass tee or elbow at the back of the engine for the sender. That's how they did it from the factory. similar to this but longer

That's what I used with another small adapter to get it away from the HEI dist.  I also have the Dakota gauges.

How do you seal the pipe threads and maintain ground (-) and keep it from leaking oil?

As long as you don't drop more than 300mv on the negative side you'll be fine. If you use teflon tape no more than 3 turns or use liquid teflon which is even better.
