Title: cab
Post by: hotrod24 on February 11, 2008, 02:19:25 pm
i have some holes where some one put a gun rack up and  i want to know how to fix them they stick out a little bit so i guess i would have to grind them with something maybe a dremel but i do not know

...Why not just put another gun rack in it...every 4x4 chevy needs a gun rack..  ;D

take the round end of a ball-peen hammer and use it to tap the high spots down. then you can use alittle body filler or even weld the holes closed. sand or grind smooth, paint and your done.

someone put one of those cab visor things on my cab. that's what i did to fix the holes. tap them below the surface a bit, almost like a tiny dent. it will be easier to hide them which ever way you decide to fill the holes.

Hotrod, The headliner angles down to just above the rear window, I don't think it would look real good just left without the moldings. Maybe you could search a salvage yard for the trim parts? They seem to stay in fairly good shape after many years. You would also have to come up with some way of holding the headliner up due to the original was held up by the trim. Lorne

Think the moulding was all the same. If not, it will all fit well anyway. I have 2 complete black sets, one from a 75 and another from an 84, both the same. Check back with me in a couple of months after I put 1 set in, I should have another set left over. Just can't get rid of either yet.

ok that would be good i thank my cab is a 74 so that 75 molding would probably work

Doesn't matter on the molding.  You could get it out of an 87 and it will fit.

i was looking at my cab and i seen a dent on the outside and in the inside there you could see it to what should i do about this i tryed to fix it with a hammer but did not work out my best guess is to take a spot welder and do it that way

Its behind the seat, & inbetween the bed and cab, why do you care, if it were me I would leave it dented?

Ditto what blazin said, you got enough other major things to worry about. Get back to it after the rest of the truck is almost perfect. The only way you are going to finish is to stay focused.

i'd weld them myself, but then again, i don't like body filler.  body filler would hold up well in a place like that and i don't think anyone would ever know but you.  i have those same holes in mine, but only 4...i had a gun rack too...i still have it actually, i took it out...its behind my seat, lol

yea i have 4 that is from a gun rack and the others i dont know where they come from but if i did weld them how would i do it with a mig welder

Start off slowly by building up around the hole, go slowly cause you dont want it to fall out and melt the metal then your really screwed, build up the metal, grind it down and if you see small little pin holes, tack it snd grind again till theres really nothing left but a smooth surface, but after your done i reccomend using USC all metal to smooth the work , it wont crack, shrink or peel if applied correctly.

thanks

Find a small bolt thats just bigger than the hole. Tap it down so the head is just below the panel then weld in. All u need then is a quick skim and hey presto. It also helps to stop any filler from sinking as you've now got a solid base to work from.

My trucks got all sorts welded in to bridge small gaps etc and it saves cutting out good metal to get to it.

Bitzer, nice trick. Thanks.

and for really tight places thread a nut onto a bolt that fits the hole. spot weld the nut to the body then unscrew bolt and nut stays there   ;)

would it be smooth where you could see it?
Title: Re: cab

If the hole is to big for the weld to bridge with the mig welder, dimple the hole with a ball hammer then drop bolt in     --------          ---------
                             --******--
                            -- -**** ---
                                  **
                                  **
                                  **

and weld where the dashes meet the stars at the top. Dont go mad in one go and keep cooling the metal or it'll distort. If any well is proud of the hole grind off flush with panel then skim and sand. hey presto

ok so you grind the bolt so it will be flush with the cab?
Title: Re: cab
Post by: Bitzer! on July 14, 2008, 02:12:37 pm
if you tap the hole inwards 1st then drop the bolt in, the head should be below the panel line. then weld it in and grind any weld flush.
