Title: Need Wiring Order for 1984 Headlight Switch
Post by: soiset on February 21, 2008, 06:06:22 pm
Hello, first post here.  I have a beautiful 1984 Silverado 4x4 in Dallas that I bought from the first owner in Raleigh, NC.  I've had it for 10 years now, and probably will have it forever.

Not too long ago, I ran into a bit of an emergency with the headlights.  The switch had been gimpy for a while, but I'd always been able to wiggle it into working.  I was about an hour away from home, on a craigslist run, and at dusk, I simply could not get the lights to come on.  Hungry, tired, and a little cold, I quickly narrowed the problem to the switch, and came up with a quick fix.  I pulled the wires out of the switch, did some experimenting, and hotwired my lights on.  I made it back home.

Now, I've ordered a new switch, but I have no idea where the 4 wires go.  I'm here to beg someone to look at theirs, and either snap a picture, or describe the layout, e.g. "red wire to left front, yellow wire to right front, etc."

I would very much appreciate some assistance.  I need my truck-truck* back!

*After we (my wife, now, and I) bought it, we heard the owner's wife call out, somewhat sadly as we drove off, "Goodbye, truck-truck!"  The name stuck.

This is from my Painless wiring manual - VERY similar:

Follow the instructions under10.6.1 - ignore my notes.

Lousy scan.

Note 10.6.1 says NOTE:   On late-style GM headlight switches, the park lights terminal to which wire 927 (brn) is connected (shown in Figure 10-6) has been omitted. In this case, wire 927 must be connected as indicated by the dash line in Figure 10-6.

Thanks for the reply.  I forgot to mention that my truck is past inspection, so this is a pretty critical fix (a man is crippled without his truck, you know).  I think I can follow your scan; please correct me if I am wrong:  From left to right, it reads
Black dome and int light return
Red Blk
Brn
Blu/Ylw 14 ga
Brn 16 ga
Brn
Grn 14 ga

Crap.  My wires are white, green, yellow, orange, orange, and brown.  No stripes, no red, no blue.

Ok according to my old stock switch that I cut the wires from it is:

White to 961 BLK
Red to 928 RED/BLK
Yellow to 907 BLU/YLW
green to 930 BRN
both orange to 959 ORN
brown to 929 BRN

That I know is correct.

Now THAT I can follow.  I've traced it out on my old switch, and it seems to make sense.  Thanks for your help.  I'll try to get a picture of truck-truck on here to show my appreciation.

Did you go to an aftermarket switch?

Yes, since I am rewiring my truck with a Painless wiring harness, I am using a Painless headlight switch.  That's why the wire colors don't exactly match up.
