Title: steering columns?
Post by: cky686 on February 21, 2008, 08:12:22 pm
Hello all. Im having trouble starting my truck. I have to turn my steering wheel like a mad man while cranking the engine before it will start.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

It sounds like an ignition switch problem, but if you have a tilt steering column and the pivots are worn, it will also cause a problem. There is a rod that runs from the key switch to the ingition switch on the column and if it is out of kilter, it will have problems

I guess what I mean is if you can wobble the steering wheel around quite a bit, then the pivot pins are worn out and need replaceing. If the pivots are ok, then you probably need a new ignition switch. Grab the steeiring wheel on the sides and rock it side to side and in kind of a circular motion. ( I don't know how else to describe it) If it is tight, the the plastic slide in the switch is probably warn out. You may just need to adjust the switch on the column. I think the mounting holes are elongated, so the switch can be adjusted. You will want to slide the switch up towards the steering wheel, but not alot, do a little at a time until it works.

If it is loose you have to dismantle the column down to the tilt and tighten the 3 bolts.  This is common on GM tilts.
