i have a fiber glass cowl induction hood on my 1980 gmc truck and i cant seem to fit wiper arms under the hood with out them hitinh and binding the motor, what is something i can do to help with this?
-
Is the hood sitting correctly? Who makes the hood? They should clear no problem
-
Is it an out law hood where the cowl goes all the way to the windshield?
-
it is made by harwood it not an outlaw but the where the 3 inch cowl is it crushes my wiper arm

its sitting correctly maybe i can notch the hood a little where the wiper arm swings
-
I would contact them and see what the deal is.

It wouldn't have to be much.

Did you put the cowl hood on? If you did did the wipers hit the original hood?
Just a thought, and the reason I had this thought is remembering bits a pieces from your old posts. You say your truck is an 80, correct? But you also said in a post in the 4x4 section that it has a 208 case. Back then I was thinking maybe some one swapped an older cab onto a newer chassis, or older nose, and or VIN # onto a newer cab, or who knows what. My point is you might have the newer style wiper transmission assembly in an older cab / nose? If so the wiper stubs are to tall, and they will hit the hood cowl, or factory. It might not be the hood!

I think blazin may be right...i was just looking at it yesterday and was wondering if it could be the wipers...i may be wrong but they seemed to sit out further than mine.

The bolt holes for the stubs are different from 80 to 81. One hole lines up but the other two have to be hogged out to get the bolts in. have your holes been modified? If not I would start looking for other clues that its a 81 and up cab with older nose, & VIN #s on it. The 81 and up stubs are taller to clear the cowl panel. The older wiper arms tuck down behind the hood so the stubs are shorter.

when i bought the truck the hood was already on it. it didnt come with wiper arms on the truck. im slowly discovering my truck is a mutt many mixed years
-
Just to be clear it not just the wiper arms, it is the whole wiper transmission assembly that bolts inside the cowl area of the cab.
-
its the wiper arms not the shafts on the outside of the cab

I think your not understanding what I am saying.
The whole wiper transmission assembly is different! You can swap other wiper arms on until your blue in the face and its not going to solve the problem. The stubs are taller hence the arms stick up farther, hence the arms don't clear the hood. Sometimes the problem is not with what is interfering etc. it could be another root problem making other things not work correctly.
If in fact this is the problem. You need to verify if in fact the wiper transmision is or is not the correct one for the year of your cab. To do this I would do two things. (1) look to see if two of the three holes have been modified. (2) figure out what year your cab is, or at least if it 73 to 80 or 81 to 87.

I agree w/ blazin,
the 81-7 had a bolt on cowl cover and had to extend the wiper arm studs so the could have clearance. What you mey need to do is go to a junkyard and look for a complete wiper arm assembly unit from a 1973-1980 style truck that has the shorter stubbies and bolt it in.But look at the cowl i think the 81-7 drivers side wiper arm assembly was 3 bolts and the 1973-1980 are 2 bolts that hold it into place if you got a 3 bolt setup you got the newer setup. You`ll just have to either weld up the holes and drill new ones for the wiper arm assembly, and you may have to do the same for the pass side arm assembly as well.
thanks

I have swaped them from one to another before. I didn't weld up the holes, just hogged them out. they are not off by much. A small OD washer takes care of it.
-
itsa not the wiper transmision it the hood it self, the wiper tansmision is the same as my 77 im just gonna trim the hood a little not like it a show truck or anything thanks for the help

Cool. sorry for the huge discusion then.
