Title: truck sat for about 4 years
Post by: chevyboy1983 on February 27, 2008, 08:08:08 pm
have a 1983 Chevy w/ a '76 350 in it.  I start it up every chance i could.  Usually about every other week,  I plan on changing the oil and all the fluids is there anything 5that i can buy to put in the engine to clean it out so there is hopefully no damage to the engine for it sitting so long.

Thanks

You can run some fresh gas and some fuel cleaner through the tank. Give it a tune up and keep an eye on it.

IF your starting it and running it(not driving) every other week, it still should be fine....  Letting it sit months or years at a time, is really when you want to start worrying about it....

Like Vile suggested though, run a good fuel system cleaner(Even just a tank or two of Chevron/Texaco Gas that already has the additives in it will work!)through it(Only run what is specific for your truck, IE don't run a fuel injector cleaner in a truck that has a carb, or vise-versus).  Make sure to add it to a 1/4or 1/8th of a tank, and not on top of an already full tank(Yes it can be added to a half tank, but be sure to put gas on top of it.. Cleaners will mix and float to the top of the fuel, and it won't go to the bottom of a full tank until the level gets there)....

Personally I would also add a clear in-line fuel filter up by the Carb/Etc, to make sure your taking an extra precaution with stopping contaminates from the Carb/etc...

i gotta say my 79 sat for about 6  year with out running. i pulled it home and a new battery and some gas down the carb. she fired right up and i was amazed it even burned the old gas. a did a tune up on it and i've been watching it close ever since and i havent had anyproblems with it- but now that i say that it will probly crap out on me tom.  :D
i was really amazed one how well the 350 preforms for having sat that long.

If you are gonna drive it make sure your brakes and brake lines are in good shape, I had plenty of brake lines rot out from sitting and fuel tanks gettin rust holes in them. Also your tires dry rot and can blow out on you.

Its also good to replace the rubber fuel hose lines.  When I got my truck fired up for the first time (been sitting for 3-5 years) I had a crazy gas leak spewing all over underneath :o
