Title: Newbie from central Mass
Post by: smitty77 on February 29, 2008, 02:02:05 pm
I've been registered for a while over at GMTrucks and just found this place while doing a Google search for parts.  Nice site guys!  I found lots of info for my project, which originally was a resto-mod on a 79 2wd stepside until I found a lot more work was required on the suspension than I originally bargained for.  I had torn the whole front-end down to the crossmember and then had to put the project to bed for the winter (no garage) feeling it was going to be a long time before I had a running truck again.  Then in mid-February I spotted a 79 shortbed 4x4 on Craigslist with a really cherry frame and drive-line but a junk cab and bed.  Best of all I snagged it for less than the cost to rebuild my frontend.  Since the body on my 2wd is nice, the only logical choice is a body swap.  Now if it would only stop snowing and warm up a bit (it was -6 F here this morning, 2 ft of snow on the ground with another 6-10" expected tonight) I can get the project back underway.

Pics to follow later.

Welcome Smitty - where ya from?

Welcome from a fellow body swapper. Putting an 84 cab on my 75 frame myself and waiting for warmer weather.

Warmer weather??  You are in the deep south -how much warmer do you want ;D  I work in my garage in 30 degree temps.  as long as the wind isn't blowing I can handle it.  Besides, this stuff is like valium to me.  You guys up north have it even worse :D

lol. I did my best work back in July when it was 107 in the shade, and my truck is in the sun. Guess it's all in what your used to ;D

Thanks for the warm reception guys!
30 is downright balmy.  I like working outside in that kind of weather - I can wear a pair of coveralls over my decent clothes and not sweat my ass off.  Supposed to be near 50 here mid-week.  You said you wanted photos, so here's a few:

The first truck, a '79 C10 Stepside Big10 - SB 350 (factory was a 305), TH350 trans, 2.73 rears

The second truck, a '79 K10 Chevy Sport with a 4" lift - SB 350 (factory), TH350 trans, 4.10s front and rear (so I'm told), T-case and axle types to follow.

I already have the front fascia and bed sides torn off of the 4x4, the rest of the bed comes off this week along with the hood fenders and doors (posted forsale here :D ).  Hope to have it down to the frame by mid-april.
