Post by: plowking_90 on March 01, 2008, 09:34:57 am
yesterday my 700r4 started acting funny, it started by not shifting into over drive, then it was banging into gears off a stop, then not shifting into second, i added some tranny fluid it was low but not bad, then it was banging going from reverse to drivebut shifting through all the gears fine, today it shifts through first and second and stay in second till i pretty much floor it.im gessingits the tv cable but im not sure i know the 700r4 is a weak tranny, what could this be??? truck is a 1990 chevy 4x4 2500

It's not a weak tranny but if you're plowing with it are you taking the proper precautions? Auxiliary cooler, more frequent services etc? TV cable adjustment is critical however flooring it will not make it upshift unless your governer pressure is extremely low. If the fluid level is correct then I would suggest popping off the governer cover and checking the governer gear and valve.

Did you check the fluid level? Did you check the TV cable adjustment?

So you have no second, do you have reverse?

check the governer valve. It's easy enough to get at, pop the cover off and remove it. Check the gear and make sure the valve moves freely.

The governer valve is behind the governer cover on the side of the trans. Big round cap, you can't miss it.

Drain the Fluid, drop the pan, look for signs of excessive debris(small amounts of fine debris is typical of a working trans, anything larger then it would be time to watch it more closely)... If large amounts of debris is found at the bottom of the pan, then do this: Replace pan, and flush fluid through it, drain again, drop pan to inspect, then change the filter....   If minimal amounts of Debris/Very Fine Debris found, go ahead and replace filter, and skip flushing procedure explained before....
