I lost my speedometer function today on my 89 suburban. Pulled the gear and sure enough it was chewed all to heck. Checked the gear inside the tailshaft cover and that one is eat up too. Pulled the tailshaft cover on the end and exposed the bearing. My question is, What is the best way to pull the C clip that retains the bearing so I can get other cover pulled to get to the gear?
-
Make sure the cable spins free and isn't the cause of the destruction of the gear. Is this a 4wd or 2wd Suburban?
-
Cable is fine. 4wd. Pulled the cone shaped tailshaft cover. The second cover is loose but there is a clip retaining the bearing from sliding off the shaft. I can probably pry this off but it is real tight and i dont want to break the clip. Is there a tool for this?

Do you have a 241 Transfer case?
-
NP203
-
203 in an 89?
-
When you buy the new gear it should include a new clip too, or at least a clip should be available.

Blazin and Zambonie, Im sorry it is a 241 case. I was thinking of my older case for my 77. I was able to work on it again today and got the snap ring off, but I dont want to pull on the cover until I know "crap aint gonna fly everywhere". I hope you guys can follow what im trying to do. I want to change the speedometer gear thats inside the case and is slipped on the output shaft. Can it be done while still in the truck? I would post pics but I can never get them to work on this site.

have you seen this post on uploading pics; http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6428.0

Thanks Chris. Im sure that will help.

Didn't look at the link but you need to pull the snap ring and the bearing off it it's a 241 then the gear slides off with a little persuasion.
-
Ok, I will try later tonight. I just asked because when I started to pull the cover with the bearing, the shaft felt real floppy without the bearing supporting it and I didnt want to go to far and have to yank the whole tcase out of the truck. I didnt think it would get this involved when i started this. I JUST WANT MY CRUISE CONTROL BACK!!! :)
-
Finally, I got to work on it long enough to get it apart. I had to be a little more aggressive than what I wanted to be but everything came apart ok. Here are some pics so you guys can see what I been trying to tell you.

Just got an idea. Cant I just flip the gear that was on the output shaft around and use the other side? Or is that being too cheap? :D
-
That's being pathetically cheap

Hey Vile, Tell me how you really feel!!
