Stay away from street racing !! Too many people are killed street racing. (not just the drivers)
Go to your local track and make some runs. Pick-up your time slips and ask him if he can beat your time and prove it with his own time slips. The driver can make a big difference also.
-
put Nitrous in there and give him a little surprise lol
I agree though, keep it off the street unless you have a known good straight away that you can get away with it.
-
I would go to the track get your best average run and tell him (if say you are in the 9's on an 1/8th mile track) I don't race anyone that is slower than low 9s. If you can provide me with proof that you can beat this, I will consider racing..... at the track.
Sounds like he isn't sure and doesn't want to get spanked in front of a lot of people.
The track makes everything even, If he leaves early he didn't win (and vise versa)
BTW, if he has a spool, I would NEVER be around his truck if he was racing it or driving it for that matter...
I think it would be a good race.

I agree, as an EMT I've cut too many kids out of cars from street racing. Save it for the track.
You can tell him what an old friend told me: "You can't brag unless you can back it up with a slip! It's all talk until you can do it against a clock."
God rest his soul, he used to race at Epping Dragway in NH every now and again, and had a couple of 100 mph patches to his name. Too bad a heart attack took it all away.
-
Yeah I have to echo the sentiments of the other guys...I wouldn't street race take it to the strip.
-
I already got a time slip, but that's not good enough for them. They all think I'm scared to race him(eventhough I've raced him 6 times already).
I thought about hooking up my nitrous kit, but my motor ain't built for it, and he's not worth it. I'm completely happy with my truck and the way it runs. I think they just want to race me to hurt my pride since they know they can beat me on the street...then they can say they beat a truck that ran 12.8. Everybody got a good laugh when he beat me with that crappy 350. That truck probably ran 15+ in the 1/4. And ofcourse it was embarassing. We raced on that same crappy backroad, but my truck wasn't lowered and didn't have the chin spoiler.
Definately. I've seen the street racing wrecks. I was involved in a highspeed crash(that's where I got the motor from) and I'm lucky to be alive. I hit a pole at 140+ in my other truck...and it wasn't fun. But the knuckleheads around here call you a sissy if you don't streetrace. Several times a week, somebody comes to my house to talk trash to me about racing. Yes, I did streetrace a few months back, but I'm convinced that it's a bad idea and I'm not doing it anymore.
-
I would much rather be called sissy than DEAD any day!
-
Street raning is idiotic. If he can't take it to the strip and race then tell him to shut-up. I used to do the street race thing years ago in my 68 Elcamino. Everytime I won, there was some excuse, " my foot slipped, I couldn't get traction, my motor isn't runnig right etc." I am sure alot of the guys here have heard similar excuses, but at the track, the slip tells the tale. I think you would have an excellent chance on the 1/8 mile track against him rather than the 1/4 mile track due to you gearing. If he is complaining about the track tearing up trucks, then that backs up the reason I like 1/4 mile racing versus 1/8 mile racing. Here they say 1/4 mile racing tears up the vehicles more than the 1/8 mile. Ok, I'll give you that, but if your ride holds together a full season on a 1/4 mile track, then you know how to built a race car, not just bolt on parts. I have a Honda VTX 1800 that dynoed 96 hp and 115 ft/pds torque at the rear tire. When someone wants to race, I tell them to bring me a dyno slip. If they beat me in the hp to weight ratio, I shake their hand and tell them they won. It is not worth it and I am tired of seeing young kids killed by this bull..Sorry, I get a little wired when it comes to our youth. If he wont take it to the track, then who's the chicken, plus if you get caught, it could mean your drivers liscense and who would be driving your ride then. In some areas, if you are caught street racing, your truck or whatever, will belong to the state, as well as your right to drive. So please, to anyone who is street racing or considering it, don't ..we loose to many young kids as is.

team39763 what does you truck run some where in the 11.80 range?
-
I ran 12.8 with no posi and no tuning. Since then, I've worked the suspension for much better traction and the posi is working now . The carb still needs some tweaking, but it's working good. So, yeah, I think 11.8 is within reach the next time I go to the track. My 60ft was crap....I've seen better 60's from guys on 20's with much less power. This motor put down 380 to the wheels in my wife's ECSB, now it has better intake, headers, less parasitic loss, and tuning, so I think the HP calculator is pretty close(as far as FWHP).
-
Did you race him previously when the truck wasn't running well?
I wouldn't let them get to you, just say I only race on the track now and let it go.
-
Yeah, they convinced me to race when my truck was backfiring and the posi wasn't working. I know I shouldn't have been racing with the truck running like that, but I guess I just wanted them to leave me alone so we could get back to doing whatever[partying, talking, drinking(not me)]. I'm no longer in that circle of "friends"....I'm a one-man-team now. I've been an outcast in this town since I moved here 6 years ago...I guess some things never change. But oh well. I should have some new numbers to report soon...my wife and I are planning to go to the track next week. Thanks for the input/feedback guys.

Smart move. Worse than killing yourself, you'll wish you were dead if you kill someone else. Just take the higher ground, offer to pay his entrance feel to the strip, and tell him to shut his mouth if he's afraid of the time slip. People like him are always full of piss and vinegar, have all kinds of excuses when they lose a street race, and can't face the truth that their ride sucks against the clock.
-
Your friend must have alot of money to spend on racing fuel to run that high of compression 14.3:1?? 93 gas isn't going to cut it. You would get better times and MPH if you put a smaller carb on there. Just bet him $50. you can beat him at the track on test and tune night, and maybe he will shut his mouth about racing you. If not put a 150 shot of spray on it and RIP HIS DOORS OFF! Then He'll shut up.
Your getting that much HP from a stock long block 6.0?
Must be bench racing.

Get a couple of old scrap motors and take em to a proper Destruction Derby! I raced "full contact" bangers over here for a few years and I sure drive slower on the roads 'cos I've had my thrills and spills on the track ;)
-

6.0L's made 300hp from the factory in 3/4T trucks, with a cam change, they get 345 out of them (Silverado SS, Escalade). With better intake and a cam, you can easily get close to 500hp out of them.
-
What your times? post a copy of it. 60ft. ect...
And what are your cam specs on this "mild cam"?? You have a cam card post it too.
Who's your tunner? What does he tune with?
-
Just an FYI, that he is running a Carb on this Joe...
-
Then he has Pro Data+ he tuned it with...

Well, I can see you're not easily convinced, but that's cool. I ran a 12.8@107, my 60ft was 2.1 or 2.2(so you can tell my launch sucked). I don't remember where the time slips are, but I'll post my next one when I go to the track. I really don't feel like posting the complete specs on my cam, but I may have posted them in a while back in a different thread. Believe me, my cam is mild. I only had trouble with it the first couple days after it was installed...it would stall here and there. My new cam is going to be: 242/248 - .608/.612 - 110 lsa and I'm sure that is considered slightly wild in the LS world. As of now, my tuner is me...I can set my timing/jetting as close to the edge as I want to. If you don't believe the numbers, go on to LS1tech and look around. You'll see....stock LS6 and LS2 is 400HP, add a cam and good intake + some headers with a tune and see what you get.
-
Sounds like a great race! If you got a nitrous kit hook it up. Get it to come in at a higher rpm and fatten up the fuel, your motor will be fine. You'll clean his clock!!!!!!!
Look brother, winning a street race don't mean a thing! If you both get to the other end with your trucks intact then that's the best you can hope for. It don't sound like you got to many people gonna judge him leaving the line early or the close finish on the big end in your favor.
What, is this pissant little prick like 12 or something? Got a pack of Friends that gotta be at the buss stop in the morning to make it to jr high on time? I wouldn't argue the point, be the man it sounds like you are. When there all warm and cozy in there mom and dads basement watching The Fast and Furious movie they've got about wore out, bust in and tell them when you're gonna be at the track you want to run at and if they show, race em n see what happens, if they don't show ( I'm betting they won't!) no big loss! You have fun running, then rub the time slips in there zit covered faces!!!!
Speaking of bets,,,,, Make em put up some green backs. That's when you see who's got balls and who still carries there favorite blanky with em. Then you can play the part of the hustler you gave em what they wanted then made em pay for it! How sweet would that be?

They said it pushed a 70's camaro to a 12.1 on motor and 10.8 with a 175 shot. And that camaro weighed 4000+ and he said his truck weighs 3600 according to his title.
How did he calculate a 70 Camaro weighing 4000+ pounds, Stock with all the fixings it was 3313lbs, a stipped SWB pickup (no power anything) will tip the scales at around 3850, that is 500lbs MORE than the Camaro. Generally this is worth about .5 seconds in the quarter mile. Not including the fact that it takes some thought to hook a truck to the ground.
How does he know it went 12.1 if he doesn't go to the track?
-
I am wanting to install a cam in my 04 and I want some numbers to compair to others I was reading about. Jesse Bubb tuned my PCM and I want MORE POWER!! 100 HP sounds good. I guess I should be reading more at performancetrucks.net
Yea Its hard to believe that you got 160 HP from a mild cam, intake, exhaust and carb.
-
I'm kinda lost I think. what's the deal this guy called you out and doesn't want to go to the track to run against you? Well, it's his loss then. But definately don't race on the street. And why are we talking about a 6.0L, did I miss something somewhere?
-

I can sell you an STS kit, that will wake it up.
I am talking about swapping the cam, carb headers and intake, not just the cam. Here is an article recently with dyno results of such a change to a used engine. It made 480hp and 450 TQ. http://www.carcraft.com/projectbuild/116_0704_lq4_short_block/index.html
-
I don't know where he got the weights from on the camaro, but that's what he said. Same with his truck. The Camaro that motor came out of did run 12.1, but it belonged to another friend of his(the builder) who does go to the real track. That's what the engine setup came out of.
Joesgarage71: I don't know what to say, all I know is that my truck put down 380 on the dyno. Have you seen the video of my truck? My cam sounds about as mild as anyone else's. Like I said, go check out LS1tech, you'll see what real cams in these motors are like. I can't really explain my setup/results, but I can give you a proven/guaranteed 100HP setup on a 5.3.....just let me know.
85MudMonster: Yeah, he called me out for a street race because he got a new motor. I already raced him 6 times with his old motor and I lost 5 times....so I guess he just wants to see if he'll beat me by more...I don't know. Not only that, but I've recently taken more pride in my truck and I don't want to risk losing it over a meaningless streetrace. We've both put a lot of effort into our trucks, so it would suck to either crash or get'em impounded. 6.0 is what motor I have in my truck..as in Lq4 based off the LS1.
Thank you CaptKaos. That's similar to what I have going on, but I have the aluminum heads and a bigger cam.

QUOTE: I'm a one-man-team from now on, I don't need friends.
i'M SURE you got alot of friends here, even if we never meet.
-
That's cool, I appreciate that.
-
I'm just gonna repeat myself here, take the higher road man. Tell him when and what track YOU'LL be at and then go have fun dialing the truck in. By the time he gets there you'll show him what it's all about!

+1!!
-
As you'll see, my truck isn't all that fast. Any truck with a decent takeoff will mop me up on the street or the track.
-
I'd like to see some pics of this engine in your truck.
-
There's a few pics in there.
-
I took my truck to the worst track in Texas. The guy didn't show up, so I just raced a Shelby Cobra and a newer z28. I beat the Shelby by 2cars according to witnesses. Here's my run with the Z28.
-
Did you get the carb worked out?
-
Yes, I did get it worked out. There were a few screws loose on the carburetor(leaks). I also noticed the posi isn't working anymore. I'm gonna just throw in a spool and be done with it.
-
What was your best time? Did your 60fters get any better?
-
The times were dead wrong and they didn't measure 60ft's. I was taking it easy on the take-off to keep from spinning.
-
Have you tryed playing with your tire pressures? maybe adding some ballest?
-
Yeah, I have the slicks down to 15psi and I have my fuel cell behind the axle for weight. I think my 60ft problem is more of driver problem. I take off either too hard or not hard enough...I guess I just need to get to know my truck better.
-
Did you just decide to start at 15 or did you "find" 15 was the best?
-
I ran them at 30psi on the street, but everybody kept telling me that it was too much, but I actually liked it. But they convinced me to drop it down to 20 which didn't really seem to make a difference on the street. When I finally did make it to the track a few months ago, I dropped it to 15 and that's what I've been running since then. It gets a little loose on the topend, but I can handle it.
-
;D That is to cool. keep tuning, you'll get it.
-
Once you get it lauching better, you can play with your air pressure for better 60fts too.
-
I plan on taking it to a real track soon, but I noticed that theres a problem. The truck is leaning to the passenger side really hard. The bumps at that track were violent and at one point I thought I was gonna either lose control or bust my oilpan on the bumps. I hope I didn't bend the frame or something.
-
Doubt that, it is normal for these to lean some.
-
I'll take some pictures on flat ground and see how bad it's really leaning. My wife and a few others noticed it too. I know the bed was about 1/2" higher on the driver side before, but the whole truck seems to be leaning now.
-
The right side normaly wants to dig in and pick up the left side. I have installed in my coil spring Elcamino a air bag to help this reaction. You might try to slip an extra spring in the right side.
Gotta watch running your tire pressure low, the tire will want to slip on the rim, make a mark on both tires and the rim to keep an eye on this. Screws in the bead keep this from happening.
If you run an MSD Box you can buy a 2 or 3 step box to add to it and use a rpm chip on launch to keep from spinning coming out of the box.
-
I'm gonna look into that 2 step idea...I'm not sure I understand how it works though.
I'm gonna take measurements this week and see what exactly changed on my truck to cause it to lean so much.
-
You can go to summitracing.com to find the step boxes and on there they have MSD directions and such.
EDIT: under search at the top of the summit page type in MSD-8737 then click on that part, then click on instructions and read
-
I'm not sure, but I think I already have a 2 step, I just didn't know what it was used for or how to hook it up. I'm still in the learning stage with my truck.LOL.
-
I see from your pics that your have the 6010 MSD box, You can do a lot of stuff tunning wise with that box and the ProData+ software.
Keep us updated.

I'll definately keep you guys updated. I'm planning a trip to the dyno real soon, we just need to find a truck with enough power to pull me there. Our Ford truck struggled last week on that little 40mile trip to the crappy track. And our little sonoma is only a 2.2L so that's no help. I may have to build a tow vehicle real quick. But anyways, I plan to do some tuning on the dyno and hopefully get a 100shot thrown in there.
