I'm wondering what I should do...I have an Olds 350 that I know can easily make 350ft/lbs of torque. I also am getting a TPI 350 from out of a camaro, I don't know how much torque it can make but the fuel economy would be good. What I want is an engine that will make 375ft/lbs of torque @ 2000rpm or more and like 300hp @ 3500 or 4000rpm. Which option would be better to work off of, the big bore short stroke Olds motor or the smaller bore longer stroke chevy fuel injected motor?
-
You'll get better cheaper results from the SBC
The olds engines were relatively low compression smog friendly gas guzzlers. They can be built but cost more $....
I just built one for my buddy
-
yeah, but can I get a high torque low rpm engine out of that TPI SBC? I mean will it do 375 or 400 ft/lbs at say like 1800-2000rpm?
-
If you want something that peaks torque at low RPMS you should be looking at a diesel. But why is your main goal peak torque at low RPM? And yes you can build your engine to promote higher torque at lower RPM.
-
I'd like a diesel, but it's too much for me just to get the engine. I mean I'm getting the TPI SBC for $100. I want lots of torque so that with the doubler and the 4.96 gears it will go over or through anything.
-
well with a doubler and 4.96 gears you shouldn't have a problem
-
yeah, and I'm gonna be running 40" tires as well. I'm gonna change out the 10 bolt axles for some 14 bolt ones, although I'd like to get some 2.5 ton planetary axles off of an old military truck, but their hard to find down here. I'm getting a 6" lift and that TPI SBC for $300 dollars though. And since I'm getting the SBC and I have a SBO I was just wondering if the Chevy can be built to make torque like I know the Olds can. And since you said it can, I think I'll be using the Chevy since it will get better fuel economy than a Carburated motor will.

TPI's are make for low end power, the were designed with that in mind. Generally they start falling off around 4800rpms. The runner design promotes torque also.
I would go with a TPI over the Olds, just don't start going off the deep end with cams and such. The TPI peaked at 245hp and 350lb/ft in 1991
the one listed here: http://www.superchevy.com/technical/engines_drivetrain/induction_poweradders/sucp_0703_stealth_tpi_induction/index.html
had a CompCam 270HR cam and headers and made 327hp and 397lb/ft.
-
that is almost the perfect set-up. I'd rather the torque come in a bit sooner than 2500rpm, but I think I can work with that.
-
You can put that in the For sale forum an I can remove it from here.
-
I was just about ot site that article went I saw you already did :P
That was a great article, made me true believer in TPI. I'd rather find a system like that and do the mods that they did than buy a brand new EFI system.

I just Got the TPI 350 block, rotating assembly, and vortec heads yesterday for $50!!! What numbers do I need in order to find out what block and heads these are so I can find the specifications on them? Also where is a good place to find specifications on GM engine parts? Thanks guys.
-
I use www.nastyz28.com for looking up GM numbers, or I go to the dealership...

Hers a good one as well.

I just ordered this book last night for the TBI project I'm doing.Putting a 93 TBI in my 78 trail truck. TPI/TBI Engine swaping By Mike Knell ISBN # 096266720X
If your doing a swap I'd get everything from that camaro if I was you. It will save a lot of cussing later.

You are going to be disappointed in Mikes Book it has no information in it on actually doing the swap.
I got one for free with his signature and some other guys...

Found out all the specs about the Engine:
The Vin said is was built for a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA. This is also the same type on engine used in the '87 C4 Vettes.
According to what I've found CR is 9.5:1 and HP output for the 87 TPI's was 235HP and 340Ft/lbs of torque
it's got Gen I heads which are centerbolt but are apparently not Vortec heads which has me confused cause I thought all center bolt heads where Vortec type heads, so I have no idea what the difference is....
Anyway, they have 64cc Chambers, 1.94" Intake Valves, 1.50" Exhaust Valves
I havent actually checked the numbers on the cam but it should be the LT4 350 "Hot Cam" type that GM makes its 218/228 .525/.525 and 112 Lobe CL, but I'll have to get the numbers off it if I can without taking it out, and see what it is....
Anyway, I've got a question here it is:
The engine didn't come with the TPI baseplate, runners and plenum, these items are not cheap even used, I've checked one junkyard near the house and found nothing, got a few others to check, but I'm wondering if a LS1 intake will fit? or would I have to get Vortec heads for that?
-
Dan, No TPI engines had Vortec heads. The Vortec heads didn't come out until 1996. They DO NOT have the 4 center intake bolts. I also do not think the "hot cam" your referring to was a production cam in that engine. No, the LS 1 intake will not fit the heads you have or the Vortec's, it is a completely different animal. well, I can't get the cam #'s without pulling it out, why don't the just stamp that on the end of it. Anyway, I kinda figured it wouldn't fit, just thought I'd ask. So now I've got to track down the chaepest TPI setup I can or else let this engine sit for like a year until I can afford the Edelbrock or Gm performance parts setups...I'm gonna go check a couple junkyards today wish me luck...

Might want to check this out.. LT1 Intake on a TPI block You can also google LT1 intake conversion
http://s10wildside.com/wildside/lt1induction.htm
http://www.lt1intake.com/services.htm This place sells them converted for $400 with a fuel rail.
