Title: tiny air cleaner on our 84 LOL
Post by: Swims350 on March 24, 2008, 12:22:29 pm
Well guys I got alot of comments on the tiny air cleaner we got thrown on our 84 to get by, and I kept mentioning another one for it, so I wanted to post a pic and see if everyone thought it be a better choice.

Now for a refresher here's what's on the truck now....

Yup, bigger is better, the more surface-area you've got to pull the intake air through the better off you'll be :)
Air restriction eats power, and that pretty little thing you've got now is going to load up *quick* :'(
I'm going with a stock-type on my '76, mostly for the thermac control, but I'm going to jump on it if I stumble across a 'tall boy' housing like the tonners or diesels have ;D

that's the one I have on my monte carlo, shown in the picture.

funny thing is I threw away one of the tall ones off an 86 k10 we had, all stock but like 4 inches tall or so.

And these trucks have quite a bit of room underneath to the hood so a tall air cleaner should fit with no problem. A 14x3 with a K&N-type filter will flow quite a bit of air for most small blocks. If it's got something like over 400 HP, I'd go with a 4" tall filter.

I remember my 81 Jimmy with 305 2bbl had this dual-type stock filter on it. Had the usual replaceable paper filter and then a permanent smaller filter. I never figured out why it had 2 and what kind of restrictions that might have caused. Not like the weak 140 HP 305 needed a lot of filter anyway. It wasn't exactly a deep-breathing motor  lol

The Smaller ones are meant for 4 and 6 Cylinder applications mostly, and I never could understand why anyone would sell those to a Customer....  Call me nosey, but I would always ask my Customers what car/truck they were planning to put an item on, that way if it was smaller, I would show them what they needed.... Would give them the info on the pros and cons to using the right or wrong items, and just let them decide what they wanted to do....  Made more sense to do this, cause in the end, it made it less likely that they would come back upset(Even yell at me for it :o)....

What's kind of funny too is that on most nice flashy engines you see with a big chromed 6-71 blower on top of it and dual quad carbs, they have those tiny filters on them. I guess that's about all that will fit though. I'd personally go with a dual-quad filter like the single-quad filter that he has on that Monte and make it at least 4" high if I had to use an air cleaner of some kind on a blown engine to make sure the carbs get the flow they need.

For Show Purposes mostly, and if they are running a Multi-Carb Setup, their not as restrictive, when using more than one...  Personally I would still go with a Large Oval/Round/Triangular Single Filter for a Multi-Carb Setup, or a Large Round/Oval for a Single Carb, as that always it to breathe better....
