Title: 1987 front bumper
Post by: dunedigger on March 26, 2008, 06:12:07 pm
Just debating on whether to make a 2 hour one way trip to buy a front bumper.  The guy claims it is perfect and has no rust anywhere.  Includes the brackets, push bars and air dam.  He wants $150 for it plus it will take about $50 in gas to get it.  Was wondering if you guys thought this was a decent deal ???

Personally, I think that is high for a used bumper.

Offer him $100 and see what he says? If he wants to sell it, he'll take the deal. If he won't, there are more bumpers out there!

He had already told me 150 before he looked at it.  Then when he dug it back out he said it is as good as new and perfect shape.  He said he didn't ask enough in the first place.  I'm afraid to drive that far to find out his perfect is not the same as my perfect.  Still not sure what to do.

I have been waiting for an original gm, now i'm not sure what to do.  Maybe I will joyride up there and atleast look at it.  You guys are saying you are getting good bumpers I will look into that too.  I got my 1987 out for the first time today this year.  I may want to get it out for a stretch anyway.

I can't tell you how many people's "perfect" or "mint" or "Rust free" I drove an hour + to go see back in the day. It was to the point where I would tell people "If I see one spec of rust I'm gonna kick your A!" lol

Does he have pix? Personally I like the smooth chrome bumpers without those push pads...

Bought real nice chrome 86 style front bumper about a year ago with brackets, bumper guards and brackets for $40.00. Buy a new one, IMO.

I mount my dune flags to the push bars, those alone seem to run like 100 for gm style without the strips.  I havn't checked out this site much for parts yet, is in my must do list tomorrow

agreed a push bar is over or close to $100 new and bumpers are the same, brackets are like $60 I think in parts books sold as a kit, and air dams are like 40 for sure in them books. Then you need hardware for air dam and they are like 10-20 I think as a kit.

IMO if the chrome is worth while on the bar and the bumper isn't pitted or bent it's a real good deal, you could always paint em, but chrome cleans up easy if it aint pitted, just use mother's chrome polish or a brillo pad followed by mother's and she looks really good.

Sounds like there needs to be a sticky stating do not post competitors links to eliminate all confusion and hurt feelings.

Hey Dunedigger,  if a ride thru the country side is what your looking for than by all means take it, I found a set of worn 35/14.50 15 swampers that the guy said were in good shape and would hold air. When I got there an hour later the tire was torn to shreads where it seats on the rim and seals the air in! Looked like they pried it off the rim with a peice of angle iron sharpened like a razor. One tire had an 18" section of it torn down to the nylon and steel chording. He had the nerve to repeat to my face they would be fine and hold air fine!!!!!! I almost bought them to have the satisfaction of owning what I was getting ready to shove up his rearend!!!!!!

Some people out there have a slightly skewed veiw of things!

Ok, I talked this guy into sending me some pics.  He sounded very irretated because I wouldn't take his word for it.  And guess what?  The bumper is no where near what I want or what he said it was.  The back side is all rust and the air dam is cracked and bent up.  The push bars are rusted into the front side.  What a joke.  Glad I saved the fuel.  I wish people could just be honest about this stuff, or is it just me.
