I picked up this 1980 2nd owner (i'm the 3rd) c10 longbed today. I can't decide if I want to sell the cab with the title and keep the bed and frame for mine or just take all that new front sheet metal off my 74 and put it on here and install the engine and tranny and have a pretty decent truck....decisions decisions...

I have the same problem with all my parts trucks. I see potential in every one of them, arrggh!!

I did that with a car recently, i dont know i alot of you are familiar with the LH models like the eagle visions and the chrysler concordes and the intrepids, well last year iwas looking for some parts for my everyday 94 vision i drive and came across a ad on ebay for a guy selling parts off this vision i seen.I emailed him and he replied and told me to come by and take a look at it.I seen it was a 96 and was missing some parts and needed a tranny i bought the car for 300.00 and later on he got me the title, well the car was so clean i didnt wanna part it out so i put 4k into a 300.00 parts car.Well its paying for itself now as the way fuel prices are going. My ol man use to complain how much it costed for gas in my 01 ram sport 4x4.SO i put 4k into this car so he can drive it.I think personally i am nuts but i too couldnt let this car go to waste and i saw potential in it.
thanks

Give her some life! For some reason when I see a beat up classic car/truck, It's just asking me to give it life. And me being the way I am, I can't resist.
That's why I didn't buy a parts truck. Then I'd have two projects. =P

You know whats sad is I can remember what trucks allot of my parts came off from on a project! Thats pathetic!

The toss-up:
74 -> needs rockers, cab corners, bed
80 -> needs front end (brand new front end is on the 74 though) and engine wiring harness
The cons to the seemingly easy 80 is the fact that I would have to carry over all my stuff from the 74 such as shocks, brakes, etc as I was stripping the 74 down to the frame, and then find somewhere for the cab so it can be repaired properly. All this out of a single car garage in a subdivision blows. I think I am going to wait it out until I can get a house out in the country with a very nice pole barn or steel garage with plenty of space to work with. Then I can make the 80 a really nice work truck and have the 74's original frame sandblasted and powder coated.
The only thing that ticks me off about all of this is the fact that when I took a load of scrap metal down last week to the local yard, I noticed a perfectly decent 81-84 c10 longbed with the engine still in it at the top of the car heap that was on it's way to be crushed! I was the one crushed. The only thing that should be crushed from these trucks is bent frames and bad sheetmetal, NOT entirely useful trucks! I am still upset about that one.

It's a shame, I know. I see it everyday. Right now everyone thinks these trucks can be bought anywhere and aren't rare. So they crush 'em. Pretty soon (10 - 15 years) it'll be hard to find a good 73-87 Chevy truck for a good price. Then again with they way gas is going..
But like they say "Don't crush 'em, restore them!".
