havin problems with starter when i hit the key it sounds like batterys dead or somethin sometimes it just clicks. but if i keep letting off and hitting it itll eventually start and once it starts cranking it cranks fine. any ideas

It could be the solenoid.

it starts a little easier hooked to a battery charger. but still not right. and my battery is new. i smoked my solenoid trying to get it started at first with timing off. soo i got a brand new one on there.

Check and clean the connections at the battery (+/-) and starter. Sound's like the solenoid. Are you running headers ? I had that problem with my 76, after replacing several solenoid switches I wrapped the starter with some heat shielding wrap. Never had that trouble after that. Seemed the headers were cooking the switches.
Someone said I could try dielectric grease on the disk in the solenoid, but the wrap stopped mine.

I second the motion....check connections. Remove ground cable from block and use sandpaper to rough up the metal then re apply. Go over entire length of positive cable from battery to starter to ensure it isn't grounding on metal somewhere.
