My stepdad got his F250 broke into the other night. They mutilated his ignition cylinder, but didn't get away with the truck. Of course the factory alarm was quickly and easily defeated (it won't go off any more). He's going to get a Ravelco unit installed, but he also wants a paging system. My question is does anyone know of a system that is strictly a paging system, no siren or flashing lights at the truck? He want's the opportunity to catch them in the act.

Catch them in the act? Do you know that most vehicle thefts, whether it is stealing the vehicle itself, or, the stereo system, only takes 60 seconds or less?
In all likelihood, by the time the pager goes off, the owner responds, who knows? They'll be miles away. And even if they weren't long gone, to catch a criminal in the act is quite dangerous. I don't believe they want to go to prison and will do anything to avoid it. Is a set of wheels worth getting seriously hurt or even killed just to "surprise" the thugs?
I may be wrong here. I haven't heard of anyone using that system before---perhaps there is a good reason.
Sorry for the devil's advocate role, but, my profession is law enforcement. If we are called on such a scene, we have plenty of units rolling in for backup. We do have guns, but, in today's media-filled, public-judging world, they practically have to shoot first before we can, for, if it is found out that they had no gun and they end up dead, WE, the law enforcement officer, will be in prison and sued for everything our family has.
The private property owner also must be certain before firing, that the criminal has a gun. If not, the District Attorney will be forced to place criminal charges on YOU.
The best thing to do if you, a private citizen, sees something in the act is of course call 911, but, shoot them with a camera at a distance. Today, digital cameras are everywhere and very small. I keep one in my car at all times--but, most cell phones have them now...note where they place their hands---fingerprints are more than likely on file, I don't think that this would be their first run-in with the law.

ok lemme put this out there. there are a few paging systems. but being an ex thief i can get around them. it's not hard, and i could have your stereo outta there, the wheels off, whatever in about a a min. most people go with partners to decrease the time needed to take what they're after and to have the extra eyes in the backs of their heads for security for themselves.
you need a passive paging system, that won't chip but will alarm you when the shock sensors are set off. he's gonna dump a good bit of money on this. but go to someone in your area that installs really high end stereo systems, for like competitions and such, they'll have an alarm system for that there.

SgtDel, I understand and appreciate your concern. And I agree that as long as they have not entered my home and pose no potential threat to me or anyone around, the best thing is not to play hero, for legal liability and personal safety reasons. And there are other considerations, for example, even if you suceed in protecting your property and escape legal prosecution, you sometimes have to deal with vengeful family members stalking you or maybe tossing molotov cocktails in your window at 3am. But then again, there are some things you just can't teach a stubborn ex-Marine. I think I'll have my uncle who is also a police officer have a little chat with him on the subject.
Nonetheless, I guess I was mistaken that a system like I described existed for not much $$$, so that may keep him from pursuing that option. But I think a Ravelco unit is still a very good idea.

If ya catch em, shoot em. A dead man doesn't talk. After they stop breathing you put a numbers deleted revolver in their hand!
-
AMEN to that. If I ever caught anyone breaking into anything of mine they'd be taking a dirt nap. I've been screwed over by the justice system befoe involving a home burglary so I'd honestly rather catch them myself and get the job done right.
-
i've caught people in my car. i let my dog handle it. my car got broken into, we caught them in it, rather than grab a gun, i let this guy chase em down.

but nonetheless, kai chased them thru some woods, thru a trailer park, thru some other neighborhood, and then next thing you know, i'm getting charged with letting my dog chase them. yup, misdemeanor dog confinement, i spent 5 days in the county, and got like an 800.00 fine.

Your dog is no match for a bullet and if he bites someone all it takes is a snot nosed lawyer to have them put your dog down because it's vicious. You should protect your animal just like he'd protect you.
Now if you really wanna nail the would be theives with a silent alarm, get yourself some capacitors, and a transformer.... when he grabs your door handle he'll scream like a little girl. ;D

I bet that thief will never return, regardless. But, vile is right, be lucky the dog didn't pull off some flesh or he'd be ordered to be put down.
The law protects these thieves more than it protects law-abiding property owners, and the criminals know that. The dang leftist fascist people running our country has made it bad for us. I love Texas! you can shoot and ask questions later.
The people making these laws are never in the situation to protect their family/property. They all live in their mansions in gated communities and ask "why do you need a gun?"
Get real capitol hill!

yeah i know i got the charges for him running loose. he didn't actually get ahold of them, but my God the looks on their faces as they tried to get across the parking lot was hilarious. one kid hit something slick and face planted in the blacktop but man you should've seen how fast he got back on his feet again. that was priceless i wish i had it on tape.

I got the bears to stop getting into my garbage years back. I took an old outdoor extension cord, cut the female end off it stripped about an inch of insulation off all three wires, stuck it in the trash can zip tied to the handle. Smeared a bunch of peanut butter right up to the bare wires. Put the lid on and plugged it in. took several nights but eventually the bears got tired of getting a mouth full of 30 amp 110. They made noises that I can't even begin to describe!! ;D
-
Putting peanut butter over the current? That's entrampment! Poor little bears. ;D
That is a smart way to negatively condition them to stay away from those shocking feed cans.
-
Right up to the bear wires, if not it would trip the breaker for sure.
What would you know about entrapment ??? ??? lol

i giggled, i imagine blazin hiding out of sight giggling quietly as the bears got zapped.
the paging system would only be good if you had a bigger gun then the burglar when you caught him in the act. i would love to be able to brandish my AR15 to some teenage idiot trying to steal something and see the look on their face.

I still like the spring board idea. Nice wet piece of ash bend it back and hook it somehow. Then set up a trigger to when the thief gets to a certain point it lets go and slaps him in the face.
Howed you loose your teeth? Well you see I was being a DIRT BAG THIEF, and I got swatted square in the face with a piece of hard wood lumber. ???
I just stood inside and watched out the window. I wish I had a video camera back then.
-
I've caught trespassers with some game cameras, they tryed to disasemble the camera but I still got them. They denied it right up to the point I showed them the photos.

I spent all afternoon figuring out how to get an aftermarket sony stereo into my dad's Dodge for our trip up north, and someone stole it that night. My sister's Probe got broken into as well. Her back window was smashed out and her stereo was gone. I wish I would have stayed awake a little longer than I did that night.
